About 11 million people could be driven into poverty in East Asia and the Pacific: World Bank

The World Bank has said that the economic slowdown due to the pandemic could put millions of people into poverty in China and other East Asian-Pacific countries. The World Bank report projected that growth in the region would slow to 2.1% from 5.8%.

Public sector banks announce deferment of EMI payments on loans

Govt extends existing foreign trade policy (2015-20) for one year till March 2021

The Government extended the existing foreign trade policy (2015-20) for one year till Mar 21 in light of COVID-19. Exports during April-February this fiscal dipped by 1.5% to $292.91 billion. Imports during the period declined by 7.30% to $436 billion.

New direct tax regime kicks in from April 1, 2020

Govt slashes interest on PPF, NSC and other small savings schemes

The Centre has slashed interest rates on small savings schemes by 70 to 140 bps for FY21. Interest rates on PPF have been brought down to 7.1% and for Kisan Vikas Patra to 6.9%. The interest rate on the girl child-focussed Sukanya Samriddhi scheme is 7.6%

Mega-merger of PSU banks to be effective from today; 6 banks cease to exist

Fiscal Deficit touches 135% of Revised Estimates during Apr – Feb

The CGA, the govt’s bookkeeper reported that fiscal deficit for the first 11 months of the current fiscal has reached 135% of the revised estimate. According to the CGA data, the fiscal deficit touched ₹10.36 lakh-crore. The target was ₹7.66 lakh-crore.

India's February core sector growth at 11-month high of 5.5%

The output of the 8 core sectors of Indian industry -coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement & electricity – grew 5.5% in February as compared to the same month last year. The growth was the best in 11 months.
