Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian of India has been appointed as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), United Nations Secretary-General General António Guterres announced.

Lieutenant General Subramanian succeeds Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar of India.

Ukraine's Maryna Viazovska Second Woman To Win Prestigious Fields Medal For Mathematics

Ukrainian Mathematician Maryna Viazovska is among the 4 winners of the 2022 Fields Medals which is considered equivalent to the Nobel Prize.

She is best known for her solution to the sphere packing problem.

The others were France's Hugo Duminil-Copin, US-based June Huh, and Britain's James Maynard.

India's Service sector activity in June records highest growth in 11 years: PMI survey

India's services sector logged its fastest growth in over 11 years after June month’s service activities improved further as per the S&P Global India Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) survey. The seasonally adjusted S&P Global India Services PMI Business Activity Index rose from 58.9 in May to 59.2 in June its highest mark since April 2011.

Sweden and Finland sign accession protocols with NATO

Sweden and Finland signed the Accession Protocols at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels. The signing was held in the presence of Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto and Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde.

The membership bids of the two nations will be sent to the alliance capitals for legislative approvals.

India’s unemployment rate rises to 7.80 pc in June, Haryana & Rajasthan top the list

India’s unemployment rate shot up at 7.80% in June with the loss of 13 million jobs, mainly in the agriculture sector.

Unemployment rate in rural areas went up to 8.03% from 6.62% in May. In urban areas, it was at 7.30% compared to 7.12% in May.

Highest rate of unemployment was witnessed in Haryana at 30.6% followed by Rajasthan at 29.8% and Assam at 17.2%.

Russia signs pact for supplying tech for Kudankulam nuclear power plant

A unit of Russian nuclear major Rosatom State Corporation has signed an agreement to supply thermocouples for four power units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in Tamil Nadu.

LUCH Scientific Production Association, which is a part of Science and Innovations,the R&D unit of Rosatom will provide the new sensors designed for thermal control of NPP process equipment

India’s first autonomous navigation facility, TiHAN, launched at IIT Hyderabad

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh inaugurated first-of-its-kind, state-of-the-art “Autonomous Navigation” facility to develop unmanned ground and aerial vehicles in the IIT Hyderabad campus.

TiHAN was funded by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology at a budget of Rs 130 crore.

CoVarScan, a new rapid COVID-19 test can identify variants in hours

Scientists in the US have developed a rapid Covid-19 test that can accurately detect all current variants of SARS-CoV-2 within hours.

The test, CoVarScan, detects the signatures of eight hotspots on the SARS-CoV-2 virus that causes Covid-19.

The researchers at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center in the US tested CoVarScan on more than 4000 patients.

Day after record-high temperature, Italy's biggest Alpine glacier on Marmolada mountain collapsed

The glacier collapsed on the mountain of Marmolada, the highest in the Italian Dolomites, near the hamlet of Punta Rocca, on the route normally taken to reach its summit.

The disaster struck one day after a record-high temperature of 10 degrees Celsius was recorded at the glacier's summit.

Marmolada glacier is the largest in Dolomites mountain range,part of Italian Alps.
