World Book and Copyright Day - 23rd April

World Book Day is observed on 23 April every year. It is organised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

The first World Book Day was celebrated on 23 April in 1995.

Theme for 2023 is Indigenous Languages.

April 23rd is the date on which several prominent authors, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died.

English Language Day at the UN is celebrated on 23 April, the date traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare.

Spanish Language Day is observed on the anniversary of the death of the great genius of Spanish letters, Miguel de Cervantes.

City Union Bank launches India’s 1st Voice Biometric Authentication Banking App

Kumbakonam - headquartered City Union Bank Limited (CUB) has launched a facility through which customers can now use Voice Biometric authentication for logging into the mobile banking app.

The voice biometric service was developed by Chennai-based deeptech start-up, Kaizen Secure Voiz Pvt Ltd, under the guidance of the 5G use case lab of IDRBT.

Angela Merkel receives Germany's highest Order of Merit

Germany's former chancellor Angela Merkel received the country's highest honour in a ceremony in Berlin.

Grand Cross award was handed to her by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Merkel, Germany's first female Chancellor, led the country from 2005 to 2021.

Only 2 former chancellors of Germany have received Grand Cross award previously, Konrad Adenauer and Helmut Kohl.

Bhubaneswar to host 2023 Hero Intercontinental Cup in June

The third edition of the Intercontinental Cup 2023 football tournament will be held in Bhubaneswar, Odisha from June 9 to 18.

The four-team football tournament will be played in the FIFA international window. The competition was introduced in 2018 to replace the Nehru Cup.

Besides hosts India, Lebanon, Mongolia and Vanuatu will be the other three teams participating.

Argentina to replace Indonesia as under-20 World Cup host - FIFA

Argentina will host the under-20 soccer World Cup, world governing body FIFA said following the decision to strip Indonesia of the right to stage the tournament.

FIFA announced the decision to remove Indonesia as host on March 29 after the country’s FA cancelled the draw to be held in Bali as its governor refused to host Israel’s team.

Tamil Nadu assembly passes Bill allowing 12-hour work days

The Tamil Nadu assembly passed a Bill seeking amendment in the Factories Act, 1948, extending the daily working hours from 8 to 12 hours.

The Bill was tabled in the assembly on 12 April.

With the latest amendment, the government introduced a new provision — Section 65 A in the existing Factories Act.

Deepika Misra becomes 1st Indian Air Force woman officer to get Gallantry Award

Wing Commander Deepika Misra became the first woman officer in the Indian Air Force to be presented a gallantry award.

A helicopter pilot who hails from Rajasthan, she was conferred a Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) by Indian Air Force chief Air Marshal for an act of “exceptional courage” displayed during a flood relief operation in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

Star Sports signs Rishabh Pant as 'Believe Ambassador'

Star Sports has signed India cricketer Rishabh Pant as its latest 'Believe Ambassador'.

The Network said it also has other current cricketers as its 'Believe Ambassadors' like Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer.

With this, Star Sports has expanded its roster from two ambassadors in 2017 to six now with Virat Kohli continuing his association.

AIIB to open first overseas office in Abu Dhabi

Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) signed a host member agreement to officially open the bank's first overseas office, an Interim Operational Hub (the Hub), in Abu Dhabi.

AIIB was formally established in January 2016 as a USD100 billion multilateral development bank (MDB) by its 57 founding members.

Centre directs states to set up 100 food streets; To grant Rs 1 crore as aid per street

The Union Health Ministry, in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, has written to the states and Union Territories to develop 100 food streets in 100 districts across country.

Financial assistance to the states and Union Territories in the form of Rs 1 crore per food street or district will be provided to fill the critical gaps.

The assistance will be provided under the National Health Mission in the 60:40 or 90:10.

Awards were given in three categories -- Centre, State and District.
