The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal has completed the first-ever genome sequencing of the Jamun plant, scientifically called ‘Syzygium cumini’.

The Jamun plant is known for its medicinal properties, fruits, and ornamental value.

the research team sequenced the S.cumini genome from the world’s largest tree genus Syzygium using Oxford Nanopore and 10x Genomics sequencing technologies to understand the genomic and evolutionary basis of the plant’s medicinal values.

With $503 bn in reserves, LIC becomes the world’s fourth-largest insurer

State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has become the fourth largest insurer in the world, ahead of US-based MetLife and Prudential Financial Inc.

The LIC is only behind Germany’s Allianz SE, China’s China Life Insurance (CLI), and Japan’s Nippon Life Insurance, according to a new ranking by capital market company S&P Global.

The state-run insurer, which got listed in May 2022, has $503.07 billion in reserves, while Allianz has $750.20 billion, CLI has $616.90 billion, and Nippon has $536.80. Allianz SE, CLI, and Nippon Life Insurance Co are the three largest life insurance companies in the world, according to the ranking.

S&P Global recently came out with a list of the world’s 50 largest life insurers. In the list, Asia accounts for 17 spots on the list of top global life insurers, making it the region with the second-highest number.

China and Japan share the top spot in Asia with five companies headquartered there. Mumbai-headquartered LIC ranked at the fourth position in the ranking.

IBM releases first-ever 1,000-qubit Quantum Chip

IBM has unveiled the first quantum computer with more than 1,000 qubits — the equivalent of the digital bits in an ordinary computer.

But the company says that it will now shift gears and focus on making its machines more error-resistant rather than larger.

For years, IBM has been following a quantum-computing roadmap that roughly doubled the number of qubits every year. The chip unveiled on 4 December, called Condor, has 1,121 superconducting qubits arranged in a honeycomb pattern. It follows on from IBM’s other record-setting, bird-named machines, including a 127-qubit chip called Eagle, released in 2021, and a 433-qubit one called Osprey, announced last year.
Quantum computers promise to perform certain computations that are beyond the reach of classical computers. They will do so by exploiting uniquely quantum phenomena, such as entanglement and superposition, which allow multiple qubits to exist in multiple collective states at once.
But these quantum states are also notoriously fickle and prone to error. Physicists have tried to get around this by coaxing several physical qubits — each encoded in a superconducting circuit, say, or an individual ion — to work together to represent one qubit of information, or ‘logical qubit’
