India’s Progress in Global Innovation Index 2023

Global Innovation Index 2023

India has maintained its 40th position among 132 economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2023, a report published by the World Intellectual Property Organization. This reflects India’s remarkable journey towards progress in the GII, steadily climbing from its 81st rank in 2015 to its current standing in 2023. Innovation has been a central focus in India’s response to the unprecedented challenges posed by the pandemic, aligning with the vision of Atma Nirbhar Bharat, as advocated by the Prime Minister.

Factors Fueling India’s Improved GII Ranking

India’s consistent improvement in the GII ranking can be attributed to its substantial reservoir of knowledge, a thriving start-up ecosystem, and the commendable contributions of both public and private research organizations. Various government departments, including scientific entities such as the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Biotechnology, the Department of Space, and the Department of Atomic Energy, alongside others like the Ministry of Electronics and IT, the Department of Telecommunications, the Department of Agricultural Research & Education, and the Department of Health Research, have played pivotal roles in enriching the National Innovation Ecosystem. The Atal Innovation Mission has also played a pivotal role in expanding the innovation landscape.
