RBI Grade B 2023 Topper Aviral Agrawal – Introduction

In terms of educational background, he has done his engineering in 2016 and after that he did multiple jobs. Then he decided to appear for Civil Services Exam, wherein he got to know about RBI Grade B Exam. Since 2019, he has been focusing on RBI Grade B Exam. He gave UPSC (Civil Services Exam), RBI Grade B (4 Attempts) and few other regulatory body exams such as NABARD Grade A, SEBI Grade A Exam. Last 2 attempts of RBI Grade B Exam he gave was with the job.

Q. How did you conclude that you must try for RBI Grade B Exam again and again?

I just believed in myself. I was never of the mindset that if I failed in the exam, something is wrong in me. I always worked upon the mistakes I did. In my last attempt, I could not clear the interview. Many aspirants commit the mistake that they don’t work on self analyzing. I think whatever the result is, your performance in the next attempt must be better than the previous one.

Q. As many aspirants are stuck in this area. How did you improve your mistakes while giving attempts?

As soon as the marks are out, one must self analyze that which areas are you stuck on. Here, mock tests worked me very well. I specifically worked on the weaker areas or time consuming areas. Similarly in interviews, Mock tests helped me a lot to understand how do you need to describe your answers. I identified my mistakes in first attempt and then through mocks, and then I started working on all my mistakes.

Q. As you are a working professional and aspirant, both at the same time. Can you please take us through your day?

Discipline is essential. As I had weekends, I used to utilise them properly. During weekdays, even if I try my best, I could find out just 2-3 hours a day so I made sure that during weekends, I spend at least 8 hours for studies. I used to read newspapers for 2 hours and rest of the time, I used to give it to the subjects. I divided equal time to two subjects i.e. 3 hours.

Q. Do we have any solution for the shortage of time that working professionals face while their preparation?

Well, it actually depends on the nature of the job. If the job is very tiring, then it can be difficult. But even after working, I think one can take out 3-4 hours a day. I believe one must remain focused, that anyhow I need to clear this exam. Only then an aspirant will be able to spend time in studying even after working hours.

Q. Many aspirants lose their momentum in 1-2 years of giving exams. How did you keep your pace of preparation going in a flow and how did you stay motivated?

Ofcourse, there were days when I used to think that I must leave studies as my job is going well but there were some sources of motivation. My Parents supported me a lot and I have 2-3 friends who were there. One of my friends is in RBI who helped me throughout. Apart from that, teachers, mentors and youtube motivators helped me a lot in staying motivated. Take adequate breaks so that you don’t get exhausted.

Q. Which is the stage where most aspirants are eliminated and why are they eliminated? Also, what are the 3 biggest challenges in RBI Grade B Exam?

Most aspirants are eliminated in Phase 1 obviously. Now, the RBI Grade B Exam Pattern is changed. Now the overall cut offs have reduced so you need to focus on the sectional cut offs. RBI Grade B Exam has become more difficult and aspirants struggle to clear the sectional cut off. RBI Grade B Exam has become more difficult and Practice is the only answer. One must give maximum mock tests. The biggest challenges are:

Keeping up motivation
Syllabus as it is vast and keeping yourself updated
Time gap between Phase 1 & Phase 2 is minimal
Exam Day Pressure

Q. What are the study materials or sources that you found fruitful for your preparation?

I relied on the coaching material. There are materials which are given out of syllabus but you need to rely on the syllabus. For Mocks, there is nothing better than Oliveboard’s Mock Test for both Phase 1 & Phase 2. I didn’t rely on books, I maintained newspaper regularly.

Q. Many aspirants ask which newspaper to read and should it be read regularly?

Initially, I started with The Hindu but then I realised for the exam like RBI where economic focus is required, Economic Times & Live Mint are important. Out of these, I found that Live Mint is better. Apart from direct questions, the quality of your arguments will improve. You will find difference in your descriptive answers and interview. So, giving 2 hours to newspaper is important.

Q. How do integrated preparation of Phase 1,2 & 3 help? How to manage time?

Until 2019, the trend was that the aspirants can focus on each phase separately but now, integrated preparation is essential. GA Questions asked in Phase 1 are on the approach of Phase 2. detailed oriented schemes are focused. I think one must focus on Phase 2 more as preparation of Phase 2 will help you out in Phase 1 preparation. According to me, till the notification comes, one must prepare well for Phase 2 and when notification comes, one must move towards Phase 1.

Q. Are there any areas in RBI Grade B Exams that you found challenging and if yes, how did you overcome it?

For me, some topics of Finance were challenging. I could not understand it so I crammed it and eventually, I understood the concepts. I believe if you think that one source is not working then search for other sources.

Q. How to do practice through mocks?

Initially, I used to give mocks and leave it as it is. This is one of the biggest mistakes I did in my preparation. Also, I didn’t gave mocks in exam scenario which is the another mistake. One must always practice mocks in exam scenario and one must analyze the topics which are consuming time. Preparation will be complete only with the mocks.

Q. How to manage the revision of the vast syllabus?

The best approach is to complete the syllabus before Phase 1. If you aren’t able to do it, then one must stick on the syllabus. The higher the number of questions, the higher is the weightage and one must prepare accordingly.

Q. Can you take us through your interview preparation?

I divided my interview preparation into 4 phases. One is application form, second is HR Based questions, third is RBI website (extremely important) and fourth is Current Affairs. They also ask about the recent speeches. One must be very well aware about the work experience and the organization in which one is already working.

Q. What advice will you give to the future aspirants?

Keep on working on your mistakes. For aspirants with 1st attempt, right direction is important. Using the energy wisely is essential as material available is vast. The preparation must be focused. Remember that you don’t need to score full marks in any of the sections.
