UPSC IES Age Limit 2024

Candidates applying for the UPSC Engineering Services Examination (ESE) should be at least 21 years old but not exceed 30 years as of 1st January 2024. In simpler terms, the candidate’s birth date must be between 2nd January 1994 and 1st January 2003 to meet the age eligibility criteria for the examination. However, some age relaxations are applied for the candidates who are eligible.

UPSC IES Nationality/Citizenship

A candidate must be either:
(a) a citizen of India, or
(b) a subject of Nepal, or
(c) a subject of Bhutan, or
(d) a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before the 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
(e) a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka or East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or from Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Note:
Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (b), (c), (d) and (e) above shall be a person in whose Favour, a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India and that a candidate in whose case a certificate of eligibility is necessary, may be admitted to the examination but the offer of appointment shall be given only after the necessary eligibility certificate has been issued to him/her by the Government of India.

UPSC IES/ESE Educational Qualification

The educational qualification required for Indian Engineering Services exam is as follows:

  • Degree in Engineering or
  • Obtained a degree/diploma in Engineering from such foreign University/College/Institution or
  • Passed Sections A and B of the Institution Examinations of the Institution of Engineers (India); or
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (India); or
  • Passed Associate Membership Examination Parts II and III/Sections A and B of the Aeronautical Society of India; or
  • Passed Graduate Membership Examination of the Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London held after November 1959.

Additional Educational Qualification Requirement

For the following posts, if the candidates fall under the above-mentioned qualification, they are eligible, but some additional qualifications are also considered: –

  • M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as the subject required for Indian Naval Armament Service (Electronics Engineering Posts).
  • M.Sc. degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communication Electronics, Radio Physics, or Radio Engineering as a course of study or master’s degree in science with Physics and Radio Communication or Electronics or Telecommunication as a special subject for Indian Radio Regulatory Service Group ‘A’.

IES/ESE Documents Verification

The list of the documents required for verification are as follows: –

  • Required documents: Photo ID (Aadhaar, Voter Card, PAN, Passport, etc.) for application; non-Indian candidates need a Govt-approved eligibility certificate.
  • EWS reservation available; eligibility proof required.
  • SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD/Ex-Servicemen must verify eligibility, submit certificates in specified format.
  • Candidates with a new disability must provide valid documents showing 40% or more disability.
  • Date of birth accepted from Matriculation or equivalent certificate.
  • Three copies of the Medical Board Report form needed, available on the official website.
  • Bring a government-issued photo ID card and three passport-size photos.
  • PwBD candidates need original disability certificate and additional copies.

IES Eligibility Criteria for Ex-Serviceman

A candidate may be eligible for a relaxation in age limit if they hold a significant permanent position in the relevant Department/Office. This relaxation is not applicable to probationers appointed to permanent positions during their probation period. However, if a probationer has a lien on a permanent position in a Department/Office supervised by specific authorities, they may still be eligible for this waiver. Additionally, candidates in continuous temporary employment on a regular basis in the specific Department/Office for at least three years by January 1, 2023, may also qualify for this relaxation. The age limit relaxation is extended up to 35 years for candidates working in following departments: –

IES Eligibility Criteria for Scribe

Persons with Benchmark Disabilities in the categories of only Low Vision will be given the option of a scribe if they want. The scribe criteria are as follows:

  • Scribe facility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) with over 40% disability, upon certificate from a medical authority.
  • Persons with less than 40% disability and difficulty writing can also request a scribe with a medical certificate.
  • Candidates can choose to bring their own scribe or request one from the Commission.
  • Details of the scribe (personal or provided by the Commission) must be provided during the online application.
  • Scribe qualifications should meet or exceed the examination’s minimum criteria, with at least matriculate qualifications.
