UPSC IES Selection Process

The UPSC IES 2024 Selection Process concludes in three steps: Preliminary exam, Main exam and Interview or Personality test followed by Document Verification and Medical Examination.

IES Selection Process 2024: Preliminary

The Prelims Exam is the first stage of the UPSC IES Selection Process. The UPSC ESE Prelims Exam consists of two papers for 500 marks in total. The mode of the exam is offline. Paper 1 includes questions from General Studies and Engineering Aptitude & Paper 2 will have specific discipline-related questions. The time duration for both the papers will be provided 2 hours and 3 hours respectively.

• The nature of the exam is objective-type and uses OMR sheets for responses.

IES Selection Process Main Exam 2024

Candidates who clear the Prelims stage, qualify for the Main exam. The IES Main Exam is conducted offline, descriptive in nature and having two papers for 300 marks each. The questions asked in the main exam are from the specific technical subjects.

• Two papers are based on the candidates’ engineering discipline.
• Each paper comprises 8 questions, and candidates need to answer any 5 of them.
• Responses must be written in the English Language.
• There is no negative marking for this exam.
• There is a 5% deduction for illegible handwriting.

IES/ESE 2024 Personality Test/Interview

Candidates who successfully clear the previous two stages of Prelims and Mains, they are qualified for the Interview round. In interview round, they are evaluated on the basis of their skills. This personality Test round carries a weightage of 200 marks.

During the Personality Test, candidates are evaluated on various qualities to assess their suitability for public service. This includes testing leadership qualities, practical application skills, mental alertness, and caliber. The examination also evaluates initiative and intellectual curiosity, along with mental and physical energy. Tact and social qualities are examined to understand a candidate’s interpersonal skills. Moreover, the assessment aims to determine the integrity of character.
