Government of India and ADB sign $200 million loan to tackle flood and erosion risk along Brahmaputra river

The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a $200 million loan to strengthen flood and riverbank erosion risk management along the 650-kilometer (km) long main stem of the Brahmaputra river in Assam.

The project interventions include stabilizing 60 km of riverbanks, installing 32 km of pro-siltation measures, and building 4 km of climate-resilient flood embankments in five high-priority districts (Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup Rural, Morigaon, and Tinsukia). These will result in securing living spaces, supporting livelihoods, and creating employment opportunities.

NASA launches new mission to study Earth’s climate, ocean, and atmosphere

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced the successful launch of its satellite mission to study ocean health, air quality, and the effects of a changing climate.

  • The satellite is dubbed PACE for plankton, aerosol, climate, and [ocean] ecosystem.
  • The PACE mission will study the impact of tiny, often invisible things: microscopic life in water and microscopic particles in the air.
  • The satellite’s hyperspectral ocean color instrument will allow researchers to measure oceans and other waterbodies across a spectrum of ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared light.
  • The spacecraft also carries two polarimeter instruments, a Hyper-Angular Rainbow Polarimeter and a Spectro-polarimeter for Planetary Exploration.

These will detect how sunlight interacts with particles in the atmosphere, giving researchers new information on atmospheric aerosols and cloud properties and air quality at local, regional, and global scales.

Foreign exchange reserves rise to one-month high of $622.47 bn: RBI

India’s foreign exchange reserves rose for a second straight week to a one-month high of $622.47 billion as of Feb. 2, data from the central bank showed.

The reserves rose by $5.74 billion in the reporting week, the biggest rise in nearly two months. Reserves had risen by $590 million in the prior week.

The RBI intervenes in the foreign exchange market to curb excess volatility in the rupee.

Foreign exchange reserves also include India’s reserve tranche position in the IMF.

Telangana Govt to set up a dedicated AI city, introduce internet as a basic right

Telangana Government will set up a dedicated AI city from 50 acres to 100 acres. The Government will position Hyderabad and Telangana as the AI capital of the country by inviting the top global and national technology companies to set up their AI Centres, said the State Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan in her traditional address to the joint sitting of the legislature.
