The National Bioenergy Programme
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has taken a significant stride by introducing the National Bioenergy Programme (NBP), which aims to foster the utilization of bioenergy sources for sustainable energy generation. This visionary program, implemented in two phases with a budget of Rs. 1715 Crore, spans from April 1, 2021, to March 31, 2026.
Phase-wise Approach to Bioenergy Revolution
The NBP’s comprehensive approach unfolds in two phases, with the first phase allocated a budget of Rs. 858 Crore. Its core objective is to provide Central Financial Assistance (CFA) to facilitate the establishment of bioenergy plants, positioning India on a trajectory of eco-friendly energy production.

Pioneering Progress: National Bioenergy Programme
By July 31, 2023, the NBP has materialized into tangible progress. The initiative has catalyzed the commissioning of six BioCNG plants and an impressive 11,143 small biogas plants across various states and union territories. These accomplishments are aligned with the NBP guidelines issued on November 2, 2022, underscoring the program’s efficacy.
States Championing Bioenergy Evolution
The commitment to bioenergy transformation echoes through diverse regions of India. States like Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Madhya Pradesh stand at the forefront, with significant numbers of commissioned biogas plants, setting a precedent for renewable energy adoption across the country.
Promoting Sustainable Biomass Utilization
The NBP’s visionary strategy propels the use of a spectrum of biomass sources, including agricultural residue, agro-based industrial waste, and forest residue, for energy generation. This innovative approach bolsters sustainability efforts without endangering forests, affirming its commitment to environmental preservation.
Ministerial Insight: A Future Powered by Bioenergy
Union Minister for New & Renewable Energy and Power Shri R. K. Singh affirmed the NBP’s success in his written response to a question in Lok Sabha on August 10, 2023. This declaration further underscores the government’s dedication to fostering renewable energy solutions for a greener, more sustainable future.
