Versatility and Power: IMPHAL

IMPHAL’s significance extends beyond its size. It boasts a versatile and formidable design, making it capable of tackling a diverse range of maritime missions. It is equipped with supersonic ‘Brahmos’ missiles and ‘Barak-8’ Medium Range Surface to Air Missiles, making it well-prepared for various naval challenges.

Underwater Warfare Competence

In terms of underwater warfare, the destroyer is armed with indigenously developed anti-submarine weapons and cutting-edge sensors, including the Hull-mounted Sonar Humsa NG, Heavyweight Torpedo Tube Launchers, and ASW Rocket Launchers.

Independent Operational Prowess

IMPHAL surpasses its predecessors among destroyer and frigate classes in the Indian Navy’s arsenal. It is designed to operate autonomously, eliminating the need for support vessels and functioning as the flagship of naval task forces, ready to confront enemy submarines, surface warships, anti-ship missiles, and fighter aircraft.

Ahead of Schedule Delivery

The timely delivery of IMPHAL to the Indian Navy occurred more than four months ahead of the contractual timeframe. This early completion highlights MDL’s unwavering commitment to continual improvement and surpassing global standards.

Inclusivity for Women Officers and Sailors

Notably, IMPHAL represents the Indian Navy’s first-ever naval warship with accommodations designed to welcome women officers and sailors. This milestone signifies a significant step towards gender inclusivity within the Indian Navy.

Impressive Endurance and Extended Missions

With a remarkable endurance capacity of 4000 nautical miles, the ship is well-equipped to execute a typical 42-day mission and extend its mission duration during out-of-area operations. Additionally, it is furnished with two onboard helicopters, further extending its operational reach.

Advanced Propulsion and Automation: IMPHAL

Powered by a formidable Combined Gas and Gas Propulsion Plant (COGAG), IMPHAL can achieve speeds in excess of 30 knots. Its advanced automation is evident in its Gigabyte Ethernet-based Ship Data Network, Combat Management System, Automatic Power Management System, and Integrated Platform Management System.

The ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ Initiative

IMPHAL showcases a remarkable indigenous content percentage of 72% in the P15B Class Destroyers, exceeding its predecessors. This underscores the Indian government’s steadfast commitment to the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) program and the growth of a robust sub-vendor ecosystem.

A Legacy of Excellence

MDL boasts an illustrious history in indigenous warship and submarine construction in India, having contributed to a range of naval vessels. Their pivotal role in the nation’s defense has earned them the distinguished title of ‘Warship and Submarine Builders to the Nation.’

Conclusion: IMPHAL

IMPHAL’s induction into the Indian Navy’s fleet represents a significant milestone in India’s naval capabilities, showcasing the nation’s progress in indigenous ship construction. As it takes its place within the Indian Navy’s ranks, it reinforces India’s capacity to safeguard its maritime interests and contribute to regional security.
