Navigating Change, Varanasi’s Second Floating CNG Station

Floating CNG Station

In a momentous stride toward a cleaner Varanasi, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, inaugurated the city’s second Floating Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Mobile Refueling Unit (MRU) station at Ravidas Ghat. This development builds on the success of the first CNG station at Namo Ghat, marking a significant advance toward pollution-free water transport in the city.

GAIL’s Eco-friendly Initiative

Both the Namo Ghat and Ravidas Ghat stations are products of GAIL (India) Limited, a prominent Maharatna PSU under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. With an investment of around Rs 17.5 crore, this project underscores GAIL’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions and environmental stewardship.

Enhanced Convenience for Boatmen

The strategic positioning of the CNG station at Ravidas Ghat promises tremendous convenience for boatmen, eliminating the need to journey to Namo Ghat for refueling. Minister Shri Puri emphasized that this move will not only save time but also substantial financial resources for boatmen, estimated at over Rs. 36,000 per year.

The Power of Clean Energy Transformation

Shri Puri underscored that the decision to establish the floating CNG station reflects a belief in the transformative power of clean energy. Against the backdrop of global environmental challenges, this initiative stands as a beacon of sustainable energy solutions for water transport.

GAIL’s Boat Conversion CSR Initiative

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, GAIL has collaborated with Varanasi Nagar Nigam (VNN) to convert traditional petrol and diesel engines to CNG in boats. To date, 735 out of 890 registered boats with VNN have undergone conversion, amounting to an investment of Rs 18 crore.

Economic and Environmental Advantages

CNG, recognized for its efficiency and environmental friendliness, not only yields substantial savings for boatmen but also contributes to reduced pollution. CNG engines offer 35-40% more mileage, translating into tangible economic benefits for boat operators.

Expanding Varanasi’s CGD Infrastructure

GAIL has allocated over Rs 350 crore for creating City Gas Distribution (CGD) infrastructure in Varanasi, with an additional Rs 100 crore planned by 2024. This project, aligned with the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga initiative, aligns with the national vision for cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

GAIL Utkarsh – Empowering Girls through Education

Following the CNG station inauguration, Shri Puri engaged with students at GAIL Utkarsh, a CSR initiative providing residential coaching to 60 meritorious girls from economically weaker sections. The Varanasi center, focused on Engineering and Medical entrance examinations, exemplifies GAIL’s commitment to the vision of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao.’

Conclusion: Paving the Way for a Greener Tomorrow

The unveiling of Varanasi’s second floating CNG dispensing station at Ravidas Ghat not only marks a pivotal moment for the city’s water transport but also signals a promising step toward sustainable and eco-friendly energy solutions. In a world grappling with environmental challenges, Varanasi’s initiative sets an inspiring precedent for embracing clean energy in everyday practices, contributing to a healthier and greener future.
