He then moved towards SSC exams while pursuing his graduation in BA to ensure he could balance studies with preparation. Starting from SSC CGL 2022, he cleared the exam in his first attempt and continued improving every year. Over time, he secured multiple selections, including Tax Assistant, and eventually achieved AIR 7 in SSC CGL 2025.

Here is Ghanshyam’s SSC CGL preparation journey and strategy.

Q1. Ghanshyam, can you tell us about your background and how your preparation journey started?

Answer: I am from Amethi, Uttar Pradesh. I completed my Class 12 in 2019 and initially started preparing for NDA and Air Force exams. I even cleared written stages multiple times, but due to issues like vacancy cancellations, I could not move forward.

After that, I shifted my focus to SSC exams. I completed my graduation in BA so that I could manage my preparation alongside studies. I started serious SSC preparation around 2021 and gave my first SSC CGL attempt in 2022.

Q2. You have been preparing consistently for years. How did you maintain this consistency?

Answer: Consistency comes from having a clear goal. Since I decided early that I wanted a government job, I stayed focused on that path. Even when things didn’t go as planned, like cancellations or delays, I continued preparing.

Over time, preparation becomes a habit. Once you understand the exam, it becomes easier to maintain momentum.

Q3. You cleared SSC CGL in your first attempt. What happened after that?

Answer: Yes, I cleared SSC CGL 2022 and got a Post/Sorting Assistant post, but I did not join because the process was delayed.

In 2023, I cleared SSC CGL again and got the Tax Assistant post, which I joined in Delhi. After that, I continued my preparation alongside my job to improve further.

Q4. What challenges did you face during your preparation journey?

Answer: One major challenge was SSC CGL 2024. I scored around 334 marks, but due to normalization issues and multiple bonus questions, I could not get selected.

That was a difficult phase because despite performing well, the result was not in my favor. But I continued preparing for the next attempt instead of getting demotivated.

Q5. What was different in SSC CGL 2025 when you secured AIR 7?

Answer: My preparation was mostly consistent with previous years, but I had more experience and better control over my strategy.

One key thing was adapting to changes. For example, computer knowledge became very important in 2025. Since my computer score was slightly lower, I could not clear CPT-based posts, so I strategically focused on JSO where my statistics score was strong.

Q6. What is your subject-wise strategy for SSC CGL?

Answer:

  • Maths: I mainly relied on books to build my concepts. I did not take any structured course. I cleared basics from books and improved through continuous practice.
  • GK/GS: I studied from Lucent multiple times to build a strong base. Along with that, I practiced previous year questions regularly.
  • English: I started with basic grammar. Being from a Hindi-medium background, vocabulary was challenging, so I focused heavily on previous year questions and reading practice.
  • Reasoning: This is mostly practice-based. Once basics are clear, regular practice helps improve speed and accuracy.

Q7. How did you approach mock tests and analysis?

Answer: Mock tests are very important, but just attempting them is not enough. The real improvement comes from proper analysis. While analyzing, I focused on understanding why certain questions went wrong and whether my correct answers were based on actual understanding or just guesses. I also paid close attention to the time taken for each question. Even if a question was correct, I checked whether I was spending too much time on it. My goal was not only to improve accuracy but also to increase speed and overall efficiency.

Q8. How did you manage preparation along with a government job?

Answer: My department was supportive. I was able to manage my work within a few hours and use the remaining time for study.

During the mains exam, I even got around 1–1.5 months of leave, which helped me focus completely on preparation. Managing both is difficult, but with proper time management, it is possible.

Q9. What role did peer groups and competition play in your preparation?

Answer: Peer groups helped a lot. We had a group of friends, and we used to attempt live mocks every weekend.

There was healthy competition among us, which kept us motivated. Seeing others perform better pushed me to improve my own score.

Q10. What are the common mistakes aspirants should avoid?

Answer: Many aspirants make common mistakes during their preparation. One major mistake is ignoring computer preparation until the last moment, which can later become a deciding factor. Another mistake is not analyzing mock tests properly, which stops them from improving their performance. Many students also get demotivated after just one bad result instead of learning from it and moving forward. Lastly, some focus only on one strong subject and ignore overall preparation, which can affect their final score. Avoiding these mistakes can help in steady improvement and better results.

Q11. What is your final advice for SSC CGL aspirants?

Answer: Do not lose hope and do not compare yourself with others. Focus on your own preparation and keep improving step by step.
