Factors Affecting the Cut Off Marks
Cut-offs are the minimum qualifying marks set by the authority conducting the exam. Candidates have to obtain at least the cut off marks to be eligible for the next rounds of recruitment. Failure to do so means that the candidate cannot proceed in the recruitment process. The following factors play a major role in determining cut offs-
- Vacancies- The number of vacancies determined how high or low the cut off goes. More vacancies means a lower cut off as there are more candidates who can be selected to fill the large number of vacancies.
- Difficulty of the exam- Once the exam is conducted, there is a general consensus on the difficulty of the exam. If the overall trend suggests that most students found the paper difficult, then the marks scored overall tend to dip, which reduces the cut off as well.
- Previous Year Cut Offs- SSC also makes sure to take into account the previous year cut off. This ensures that the cut off does not vary drastically from the previous year.
