Q: Can you tell us about your background?

I am Tusar Debnath from Ranaghat, Nadia District of West Bengal. I come from a lower-middle-class family and completed my 10th and 12th exams from a Bengali medium school. In my 10th class, I scored 52 marks in English and 70 in Mathematics, which made me very afraid of my future. Due to financial problems, I decided to attempt government job exams from the age of 18.

Q: How did your journey in government job preparation start?

After passing my 12th exam in 2018, I started preparing for government jobs. However, I did not get proper guidance in the beginning, and I spent 3-4 years wandering without enough preparation to clear a single exam. But I did not give up, and finally, on March 24, 2023, I cleared SSC MTS and was selected for Income Tax, Chennai.

Q: What were your initial job achievements?

After clearing MTS, I also got selected as an Assistant Workshop in Railways in my home state through the Railway Group D exam. At the same time, I continued my preparation for SSC CGL 2022 and successfully cleared it, securing the position of Postal Assistant in my home district.

Q: What motivated you to aim for higher posts?

Initially, my goal was to get just one government job. Even a Group D job seemed like heaven to me. Many selected candidates used to say that they were good in Mathematics and English, but I was not as brilliant as them. However, after getting the Tax Assistant post through SSC CGL 2023, I gained confidence that I could achieve even higher posts. So, I worked harder for SSC CGL 2024 while managing my job and study schedule.

Q: How did you prepare for SSC CGL 2024?

  • Mathematics: First, I cleared my basics and solved PYQ (Previous Year Questions) books. I marked 30-50 important questions from each chapter and revised them multiple times. I also focused on recently conducted exam questions and practiced mains-related topics and calculation-based quizzes.
  • Reasoning: I followed the same method as Mathematics. I marked important PYQ questions and revised them multiple times. I focused on mains-related topics like statement-based questions and puzzles.
  • English: I spent maximum time on English. I revised grammar rules, solved questions, and practiced mixed error detection from PYQ books. In vocabulary, I learned 50 words daily, focusing on synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitutions, idioms, and especially phrasal verbs and prepositions. For comprehension, I practiced PYQs and Oliveboard mock tests.
  • General Knowledge (GK): I read concise chapter-wise notes and covered the PYQ book completely. I studied all answer options from PYQs. My strategy was to attempt 22-23 out of 25 questions using intelligent guesswork, a technique I developed through Oliveboard mock tests. In the final exam, I attempted 22 GK questions, out of which 16 were correct.

Q: How did you prepare for the Skill Test (DEST & CPT)?

  • Typing (DEST): I memorized the keyboard layout so well that I could recall it in my sleep. Then, I practiced typing mock tests from Oliveboard. In the actual DEST test, my error rate was 0%.
  • Computer Proficiency Test (CPT): I studied only from the PYQ book. My CPT score was 45.

Q: How important were mock tests in your preparation?

Oliveboard mock tests helped me a lot. I attempted all full-length and sectional mock tests. The solutions provided were easy to understand. I properly analyzed each mock test, which improved my performance.

Q: What advice would you give to future SSC aspirants?

  • PYQ-based preparation is key: Focus on solving previous year questions as they reflect the actual exam pattern.
  • Start mock tests from Day 1: It helps in checking competition level and improving performance.
  • Set a target and work hard: My goal was to secure a rank under 1000, and I worked hard to achieve it.
  • Believe in yourself: Hard work and dedication will lead you to success.

Q: What was the result of your SSC CGL 2024 attempt?

After working hard day and night, I finally cleared SSC CGL 2024 with AIR 615 and secured my dream post as Excise Inspector. This journey made me believe in God because, with his blessings, everything is possible.
