From JAIIB to IIBF Professional Banker: Gaurav’s Banking Success Story

For Canara Bank banker Gaurav, professional growth was never only about promotions or increments. His bigger goal was to build stronger banking knowledge, one certification at a time. That approach took him from clearing JAIIB and CAIIB to earning the IIBF Professional Banker title.

What makes his journey interesting is that he came from a B.Tech, non-commerce background, yet went on to clear multiple IIBF certifications through consistent preparation.

How Gaurav Became an IIBF Professional Banker

Gaurav’s journey started with JAIIB, which he cleared in November 2024 in his first attempt. After that, he took up CAIIB and cleared all the papers in the June 2025 attempt, again in a single attempt.

But he did not stop with JAIIB and CAIIB.

After CAIIB, Gaurav continued adding certifications to his banking knowledge. He cleared CCP (Certified Credit Professional) in his first attempt and also cleared examinations covering areas such as Strategy, Ethics and Risk in Financial Services.

Alongside his certification journey, he appeared for his bank’s promotion exam and secured Rank 1 in Uttar Pradesh and All-India Rank 6.

Eventually, this continuous learning journey led to his achievement as an IIBF Professional Banker.

For Gaurav, however, the title was not something he had planned from the beginning. His immediate goal after CAIIB was CCP because he believed that understanding credit and loans was essential for a banker.

One certification led to another, and the journey gradually evolved into something bigger.

Why Knowledge Mattered More Than Just Increments

Gaurav believes JAIIB and CAIIB should not be viewed only as exams that can help with increments.

For him, the real value was knowledge.

As a banker dealing with areas such as loans, credit and banking processes, he felt that better subject knowledge could help reduce mistakes and improve decision-making. This became one of the biggest reasons he continued learning even after clearing CAIIB.

His journey from JAIIB to CAIIB, CCP and eventually Professional Banker reflects that mindset: learn first, and let the professional benefits follow.

Gaurav’s IIBF Preparation Strategy

Gaurav kept his preparation focused instead of depending on too many resources.

For JAIIB, he used Oliveboard’s Super Elite batch and relied largely on recorded classes because his work schedule did not always allow him to attend live classes.

When he moved to CAIIB, he followed Oliveboard’s course as his primary resource and used Capsule Batches and marathons mainly towards the end for additional revision.

He also created his own short notes and revised them repeatedly.

His preparation revolved around:

  • Completing classes and making concise notes
  • Practising questions and numerical problems
  • Taking mocks and analysing mistakes
  • Revising weak areas before the examination

For numerical-heavy subjects such as BFM and ABFM, he focused heavily on practice. For BRBL, he repeatedly revised the relevant sections and questions.

Gaurav also credits mock-test practice for helping him become comfortable with exam pressure. His approach was to attempt difficult mocks, analyse his performance and understand where he was losing marks before the actual examination.

Why Consistent Preparation Worked for Gaurav

Gaurav did not believe in leaving IIBF preparation until the final few days.

He aimed to complete his main classes and preparation well before the examination, leaving the final phase for mocks, analysis and revision.

He generally studied around 2–3 hours a day, often using the early morning for focused preparation before heading to the branch.

For each paper, he followed a simple cycle: learn the concept, make short notes, practise questions, take mocks and revise the areas where he needed improvement.

He also used Oliveboard’s numerical classes and YouTube marathons for additional practice when required.

This helped him keep his preparation manageable alongside a full-time banking job.

From Banking Certifications to Professional Banker

Gaurav never started his journey with a fixed plan to become an IIBF Professional Banker.

He simply focused on the next step.

First JAIIB. Then CAIIB. Then CCP. Then more specialised certifications and examinations.

That step-by-step approach eventually took him to the IIBF Professional Banker title.

His story is also a reminder that a commerce background is not the only path to building expertise in banking. With the right approach, consistent preparation and a willingness to keep learning, professionals from different academic backgrounds can continue developing their banking knowledge.

Gaurav’s Advice to Aspiring Professional Bankers

His advice is straightforward: do not prepare only for the increment or the qualification. Focus on what you are actually learning.

For candidates who have attempted an IIBF examination more than once, he has an equally simple message: do not quit. Identify where you went wrong, work on those areas and attempt it again.

For Gaurav, becoming an IIBF Professional Banker is not the end of his learning journey either. He plans to decide his next certification or learning goal after evaluating what he wants to pursue next.

His journey from a non-commerce background to an IIBF Professional Banker ultimately comes down to one philosophy: keep learning, take one step at a time, and focus on becoming better at your profession.
