National Thermal Power Corporation or NTPC is India’s biggest power company and is one of the top public sector companies of the country. NTPC hires engineers every year, from various trades such as Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics & Communication for filing up government positions. Recruitment of candidates takes place through entrance examinations such as GATE.

 NTPC is based in New Delhi, which serves as its headquarters. Based in Noida, it is the largest operational centre, and that is why it is one of the most coveted government jobs for engineers.

Not many people do not know this, but public sector banks require a considerable number of engineers every year for their day-to-day functioning. Recruitment of IES officers take place through the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), and the governing body that handles the paper is the UPSC. One of the biggest reasons why this position is the most sought after is due to the high amount of respect and stature attached to it. IES officers recruited through the ESE exam are generally employed in government departments, such as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Indian Navy, Directorate General of Supply and Disposals, Central Public Works Department etc.

The Indian Armed Forces that include the Indian Navy, Indian Air Force, and Indian Army hire many candidates every year, as part of their technical entry plan. Engineers fresh out of college are asked to apply for the technical officer’s post and selection takes place based on merit. In other words, the higher your percentage, better are your chances of getting through. Indian Armed forces also organize another entrance exam called the Combined Defense Services or CDS, in order to recruit graduates. This exam begins with a written CDS examination, which is followed by the Service Selection Board or SSB and finally, a medical examination. Only unmarried candidates can apply for the CDSE exam, which happens twice a year. Once selected, the engineers undergo training with their individual branch and are later hired as officers, once the training is complete.
