Directions

There are technically 10 directions. Like, North, South, East, West, NorthEast, NorthWest, SouthEast, SouthWest and Up-Down. 

First and foremost, you need to remember each main direction change undergoes a 90° change in direction. For instance, going from North to West/East will be a 90° change. However, the change in direction between North and North-east is only 45°

Directions in Kannada and English are as follows 

• North – ಉತ್ತರ (Utthara)
• North-East – ಈಶಾನ್ಯ (Eeshanya)
• East – ಪೂರ್ವ (Purva)
• South-East – ಆಗ್ನೇಯ (Agneya)
• South – ದಕ್ಷಿಣ (Dakshina)
• South-West- ನೈಋತ್ಯ (Naikhathya)
• West- ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ (Pashima)
• North-West- ವಾಯುವ್ಯ (Vaayuvya)

Directions Names in Kannada

It is often confusing to decide the directions. Especially remembering it in English like North-East North-West. We can easily understand direction if we correlate with our native language like Kannada, So lets see the meaning of directions in Kannada.

The directions names in Kannada is mentioned above but there other names for each direction. Like, ಬಡಗಣ is another direction name in Kannada for ಉತ್ತರ. Direction name in Kannada for ದಕ್ಷಿಣ is ತೆಂಕಣ likewise ಪೂರ್ವ = ಮೂಡಣ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ=ಪಡುವಣ. These four directions are most commonly used in daily life as well as in studies. The other four cardinal directions are ಈಶಾನ್ಯ, ವಾಯುವ್ಯ, ಆಗ್ನೇಯ, ನೈಋತ್ಯ. This sentence goes in clockwise direction, starting from north which means ಉತ್ತರ, then moves in the clockwise way to ಈಶಾನ್ಯ, and then so on to, ಪೂರ್ವ, ಆಗ್ನೇಯ, ದಕ್ಷಿಣ, ನೈಋತ್ಯ, ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ, ವಾಯುವ್ಯ.This also helps you remember direction in English if you know the directions in Kannada and English.

Meanings Cardinal Directions in Kannada

Like I mentioned the direction names in Kannada earlier there are other names for the remaining four cardinal directions as well 
ಈಶಾನ್ಯ=ಮೂಳ್ವಡ 
Which means the combination of ಮೂಡಣ+ಬಡುವಣ As ಈಶಾನ್ಯ comes in between North-East .
Similarly ಆಗ್ನೇಯ=ತೆಮ್ಮೂಡು which means ಮೂಡಣ+ತೆಂಕಣ. ಆಗ್ನೇಯ can also be called as ಮೂಡುದೆಂಕಣ or ತೆಂಕುಮೂಡಣ. 
ನೈಋತ್ಯ=ತೆಂಪಡು= ತೆಂಕಣ+ಪಡುವಣ. Also known as ತೆಂಕುವಡುವಣ or ಪಡುದೆಂಕಣ. These are the terms of direction in Kannada mainly used in the local language. But for administrative and formal language the terms goes as ಈಶಾನ್ಯ, ಆಗ್ನೇಯ, ನೈಋತ್ಯ and ವಾಯುವ್ಯ.

Directions Meaning in Kannada 

Direction means a path along which someone or something moves. In kannada direction means ದಿಕ್ಕು (Dhikku). 

In Indian Philosophy each direction is guarded by Lords called as ಅಷ್ಟದಿಕ್ಪಾಲಕರು. Which means guardians of all eight directions. 

• North ಉತ್ತರ (Utthara) – This direction is guarded by Lord Kubera
• South ದಕ್ಷಿಣ (Dakshina) – Guarded by Lord Yamraj
• West ಪಶ್ಚಿಮ (Pashima) -Varun, the Lord of this direction, guards this path
• East ಪೂರ್ವ (Purva) – In this direction, the Lord Indra watches over

The meaning of Cardinal Direction in Kannada is based on the guardian of that particular direction

• ಈಶಾನ್ಯ – Guarded by Shiva Also known as ಈಶ 
• ವಾಯುವ್ಯ- The guard is Lord Vayu, ವಾಯು 
• ನೈಋತ್ಯ- This Direction goes with the name of the guard Nairutya, ನೈಋತ್ಯ

In exams sometimes the questions may be tricky like Kavita turning left from north and traveling for 45km. Now turning changes the direction. 

So if a person moves to right, that is clockwise direction and if moves to left, that is anti-clockwise direction. While assuming someone is turning to the left or right we consider the angle of movement is 90 degrees.
