GSAT-24 Successfully Commissioned

NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) has partnered with Tata Play to launch the GSAT-24 satellite in June 2022, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s government. The GSAT-24 satellite has now been put into operational use by Tata Play, starting from August 7th, 2023.

The inaugural ceremony took place at Tata Play’s Broadcast Centre in New Delhi. During the event, Shri Apurva Chandra, Secretary of Information & Broadcasting, expressed his joy and congratulated the Department of Space (DoS) and Tata Play for the successful commissioning of GSAT-24. He highlighted that this achievement is another stride towards a self-reliant India (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) in the realm of space and communication.

About GSAT-24

GSAT-24, a communication satellite weighing 4 tonnes, developed by ISRO to provide Direct-to-Home (DTH) services, is now fully operational at its maximum satellite capacity after thorough in-orbit testing.

  • It was launched on 22 June 2022 on an Ariane 5 rocket from the European Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.
  • This remarkable accomplishment represents a technological revolution in India’s telecommunications field, showcasing advanced indigenous technology.
  • It also stands as a tribute to India’s aerospace excellence and marks the country’s successful entry into the Demand Driven Mission category.
  • GSAT-24 operates in the Ku band and was specifically launched by the Indian government to meet the DTH application requirements of Tata Play.
  • The entire satellite capacity of GSAT-24 has been leased to its dedicated customer, Tata Play.

Significance

  • This mission with GSAT-24 represents the first Demand Driven communication satellite initiative led by NSIL after the reforms in the space sector.
  • The satellite is set to usher in a new era of satellite television for India.
  • It underscores the success of the ‘Make In India’ initiative by enabling advanced digital TV transmission capabilities for domestic broadcasting services.

Congratulations to the collaborative efforts of NSIL, ISRO, and Tata Play for the successful realization of this project.

Why does Tata Play Need a satellite?

  • Tata Play currently offers 600 channels, but with the integration of the ISRO satellite (GSAT-24), it will be able to transmit 900 channels, providing a significant benefit to the general public.
  • This expanded capacity will ensure that these channels are accessible throughout the country, including remote regions like the hilly North-East and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
  • With the inclusion of GSAT-24, Tata Play will have increased bandwidth, resulting in improved picture and sound quality for users.
  • Additionally, this enhancement enables Tata Play to accommodate 50% more channels, making it the largest satellite bandwidth provider among all DTH platforms.
  • This initiative also underscores Tata Play’s commitment to linear TV services, especially in a country where around 140 million households are yet to acquire their first television.

This achievement is a realization of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of privatization and the establishment of NSIL. It marks a significant collaboration where NSIL launched a demand-based satellite in partnership with Tata Play.
