How to Join RAW After UPSC
For candidates looking for entry via examination, the UPSC exam is the only option. First, the candidate has to appear for the group A Civil Services Exam. After qualifying for this exam, they can appear for the main RAW examination. The RAW exam consists of a written exam followed by an interview.
Also, the candidate must have completed his graduation before appearing for the UPSC exams. The candidate must know at least one foreign language. After qualifying for the civil services exams, the candidates get the requisite training. Then they join their respective Cadre. These include the post of IPS, IRS, etc. Later, on account of experience and seniority, they are recruited into RAW. Also, the candidate must be less than 56 years of age and must be a citizen of India. The candidate must not have a criminal record and be free from any Drug addiction.
Training
Before joining RAW, the candidate goes through basic and Advanced Training. The basic training is an induction program. It lasts for only ten days. Basic skills such as analysis of quantitative and qualitative pieces of information are taught.
The advanced training takes place under the watch of the Field Intelligence Bureau(FIB). This training can last for 2 years.
They are exposed to real-world circumstances. The idea is to ensure that adequate exposure is made available before being a part of the agency.
Training of arms and ammunition is also provided. That is done under the supervision of the Indian military academy.
All the training is given by Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. After that, interviews are conducted. The selected candidates work for RAW for one year.
Guidance to clear UPSC
Since there is no direct entry into RAW, the candidates have to go through UPSC exams setup. There are some points which the candidate should keep in mind during UPSC preparation. The UPSC exams consist of 3 stages. These are Prelims, Mains, and the interview. The Prelims exam has 2 papers. These are paper I: General Studies and Paper II: General Studies II (CSAT). Both the paper carry a weight of 100 marks and are to be completed within 2 hours. The marks of Prelims exams will not be considered for the final score.
There are 9 papers in the main exam. The UPSC will not consider the marks obtained in Paper A and Paper B for Rank calculation. Candidates must score at least 25% on each of the papers. For the two last papers, the candidate will have to choose his optional subject.
The last step is the interview. Some of the assessed qualities include Critical thinking, leadership skills, Risk aversion skills, and leadership qualities.
For the general category, the age limit is between 21 to 32 years of age. For the OBC category maximum of 9 attempts are available. For SC and ST categories, there is no limit to attempt. Physically handicapped (including General and OBC category) can appear 9 times. For Candidates who belong to SC, ST communities and are physically handicapped, there is no limit to attempt.
The ideal approach should be to cover the whole syllabus. A selective study should not be applied. Taking a mock test is advisable after completing the full syllabus or a substantial portion.
