★ भारत मे जनगणना की शुरूआत 1872 मे लॉर्ड मेयो के कार्यकाल मे हुयी थी।
★ भारत मे नियमित जनगणना की शुरूआत 1881 मे लॉर्ड रिपन के कार्यकाल मे हुयी थी।
★ 1881 मे जनगणना आयुक्त W.W. Plodan थे जबकि 1951 मे स्वतंत्र भारत की पहली जनगणना के समय जनगणना आयुक्त R.A. Gopalswami थे।
★ दशकीय जनगणना की शुरुआत 1790 से अमेरिका मे हुयी।
★ 2011 की जनगणना यानी 15वीं जनगणना (स्वतंत्र भारत की 7वीं जनगणना) की शुरुआत महापंजीयक एवं जनगणना आयुक्त Dr. C. Chandramouli के द्वारा Apr 1, 2010 से की गयी।
★ जनगणना 2011 का शुभंकर “प्रगणक शिक्षिका” थी तथा इसका आदर्श वाक्य “हमारी जनगणना हमारा भविष्य” था।
★ जनगणना 2011 का अंतिम आंकडा Apr 30, 2013 को जारी किया गया। इसके अनुसार :
★ भारत की कुल जनसंख्या 1.2105 अरब है जिसमे 62.31 करोड (51.47%) पुरूष हैं एवं 58.74 करोड (48.53%) महिलायें हैं।
★ जनगणना 2011 के अनुसार देश मे अनुसूचित जाति की कुल जनसंख्या 20.14 करोड है जो देश की कुल जनसंख्या का 16.6% है।
★ जनगणना 2011 के अनुसार देश मे अनुसूचित जनजाति की कुल जनसंख्या 10.43 करोड है जो देश की कुल जनसंख्या का 8.6% है।
★ जनगणना 2011 के अनुसार भारत की कुल जनसंख्या विश्व की कुल जनसंख्या का 17.5% है।
★ जनसंख्या मे वार्षिक वृद्धि दर 1.97% से घटकर 1.64% हो गयी है जबकि दशकीय वृद्धि दर 21.54% से घटकर 17.7% हो गयी है।
