My Exam Journey : Ups & Downs, but Success in the end

This is a post about my exam journey with lots of ups and downs, but remarkable success in the end.

I started writing exams when I was doing my MCA from NIT Jamshedpur but I was not at all serious and was not preparing for exams with a proper strategy.

Exams written till 2015 and their results:

  1. SSC 2010: cleared pre, failed in mains
  2. IBPS PO 2010: cleared the written but didn’t get any call from any bank
  3. SSC 2011: cleared pre, failed in mains
  4. FCI AG-iii(Accounts): qualified but did not go for Doctor’s Verification as I was not from Bcom. background.
  5. IBPS PO 2011: failed in written by 3 marks
  6. SSC 2012: cleared pre and mains (Statistical Investigator post). Didn’t go for Interview because my training was going in Infosys. I thought I will prepare well next time and get a better job, which was my biggest mistake.
  7. IBPS PO 2012: Did not clear the written exam
  8. SSC 2013: cleared pre, failed in mains
  9. IBPS PO 2013: missed by 2 marks
  10. SSC 2014: cleared pre, failed in mains
  11. BOM (IT officer): could not get final selection after interview
  12. SSC 2015: cleared pre, failed in mains
  13. SBI PO 2015: failed in mains by 0.5 marksbank exam government exam

There was a reason for not being serious as I got placed through on-campus and joined an IT company 4.6 years back. Things were going fine and then I got embroiled in a personal relationship. I forgot everything about my career, but after spending a whopping 2.5 years I came out of that situation and started my serious preparation from April 2015. I knew from the start that working in IT sector was temporary for me and a Government job was my dream throughout.

I started following some GK websites daily, bought Oliveboard mock tests and started studying. Unfortunately, I missed many exams by 0.25-2.5 marks range but I never lost hope, deep down I knew I will make it. This motivation encouraged me to continue my preparation. It’s never easy to prepare for any exam while working in a private/IT company, but I had set my goal that I must do something in life and cracking these exams became the main aim for me.

Serious Preparation Started Now Onwards

  1. IBPS PO 2015: missed final selection by 2 marks
  2. IBPS RRB scale 2 officer: missed written by 0.50 marks
  3. IBPS SO 2015: missed final selection by 2.5 marks
  4. Karnataka Bank(Officer): could not get final selection after interview
  5. RBI Grade B 2015: cleared Pre, failed in mains
  6. SSC 2016: failed in pre by 3 marks
  7. SBI 2016: missed by 0.25 marks
  8. FCI (AG-iii) (General): selected for south region but did not join as I was waiting for an officer post
  9. IBPS PO 2016: failed in English section in mains
  10. IBPS SO 2016: failed by 6 marks
  11. RBI Grade B officer 2016: cleared pre, failed in mains
  12. NABARD Assistant Manager: missed mains by 10 marks
  13. IBPS RRB PO 2016: selected in Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank
  14. Qualified Central Warehouse Corporation exam for Superintendent (General)

One can see the number of exams written by me and my struggle, my only suggestion to aspirants would be “not to give up” whatever situation you are into. You keep practicing/studying and your day will come for sure, for some it comes easily for others it takes some time which happened in my case as well.

“Zindagi chalte rahne ka naam hai ye ruk gayi to jinda insaan bhi kisi kaam ka nahi”

Here is a brief about my preparation:

-Studied economics and finance for RBI grade B exam

-Agriculture and rural development for Nabard exam

-GA for all the exams

-Statistics for SSC

-As I have done B. Sc (H) Maths, my maths was above average

-I did MCA, so computer knowledge was also good

-GK used to be my weakest section some 2 years back, but now I enjoy reading GKs even though I don’t have any upcoming exams

-Top tip: One should not study only to clear the exams, one should study to acquire knowledge, to become versatile so that if any discussion is going on anywhere one should be able to talk on any of the topic for 15-20 minutes

I could happily enjoy my life in IT industry but I still remember Jack Ma’s line which he said in an interview à

“A person’s passion is defined by the work done by him/her from the time utilized during the period (the time he/she leaves office and the time he/she enters the office again next morning)”.

That’s what I did, working in company for 9-10 hours, and even after being tired, I used to manage studying for 2-3 hours daily. One can work in different industry but one should not lose the passion of his life. Even though I was working in IT industry I never got a KICK for which I was waiting, the KICK for me was – to get a Government Job, as private industry lacks in job security. Once recession starts even top performers don’t feel safe in the company.

Last but not the least: – Have faith in yourself, try to work on your weakest section and improve in that section, never get scared of a particular section because in most of the exams now days you need to clear all the sections not the total overall score.
