SEBI Grade A Exam Analysis 2023 was out on 5th August 2023 as the Phase 1 Exam of the Legal Officer was conducted. The admit cards for the same were out on 26th July 2023. The candidates will be able to find the difficulty level, good attempts, and section-wise analysis in the subsections below for SEBI Grade A Exam Analysis.

This is for the Legal Stream.
The SEBI Grade A Phase 1 Exam consists of two papers i.e.
Paper 1: Multiple choice questions on the subjects viz. General Awareness (including some questions related to the Financial Sector of easy to moderate difficulty level), English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, and Test of Reasoning.
Paper 2: Multiple choice questions on Specialized subjects related to the stream.

Now let us look at the types of questions asked in both Paper 1 and Paper 2 along with the difficulty level of each of the sections.

Reading Comprehension | 5 Questions were asked in the reading comprehension question. Topic: Importance of Weather Forecasting in Agriculture. |
SEBI Grade A 2022 Phase 2 – Paper 2 Analysis
Here are the important takeaways from the Paper 2 analysis. This feedback was given by the students who went on to take the exam.
- Paper 2 was on the lengthier side.
- Statement-based questions (find correct/incorrect statements) were asked.
- Questions were asked from all the sections (Costing, Commerce & Accountancy, Companies Act, Economics, Finance & Management). It was a good mix of questions.
- They stuck to the syllabus. Questions asked were strictly from the syllabus provided. Nothing out from the syllabus was asked.
- The finance section had questions from current affairs.
- 10-12 Numerical questions were asked from the sections of Costing, Economics, Commerce & Accountancy.
- We can say that the overall good attempts were 35 out of 50 questions.
Now let us look at the topics from which the questions were asked in Paper 2.

1. Management | Lengthy and concept-based questions were asked. Topics – Leadership, HRD, Communication, Motivation. Moderate difficulty level questions were asked. If your concepts are clear, then you would find these easy. |
2. Finance | 3 Financial awareness questions related to SEBI were asked. Other areas Covered were GST, Treasury bills. Easy to Moderate difficulty level questions were asked. |
3. Commerce & Accountancy | 4 numerical questions were asked from the given topics: AS, Balance Sheet, Interest Coverage Ratio, Share Price. Statement based questions were also there. There were 2 theory-based questions. Overall this section was a difficult one. |
4. Costing | 3-4 numerical questions were asked wherein 2 were from the topic of Methods of Costing. 3-4 Questions were theory-based. This section can be considered difficult because of numerical questions. |
5. Companies Act | Factual and direct questions were asked from this section. Overall, it was an easy section. |
6. Economics | Lengthy statement-based questions were asked. Mainly microeconomics questions were asked in this section. 3 numerical questions from the topics of factor cost, exchange rate conversion, break-even point). Other areas covered were Philips Curve, Demand & Supply – slope question, Market Structure, Supply of Money, Monetary Policy. Overall, this section can be called medium to difficult. |

(On-line screening examination consisting of two papers of 100 marks each),

- Paper-2 – 100 Marks – 40 Mins – 40% cutoff

Important Pointers to note about the Phase 1 exam pattern:
- There shall be negative marking (1/4th of marks assigned to the question) for the Paper 1 and Paper 2 in Phase 1.
- There shall be a cut-off of minimum 30% for Paper 1 (no sectional cut-off shall be there) and a cut-off of minimum 40% for Paper 2 in Phase 1.
- Candidates would need to secure separate cut-off in each paper as mentioned above as well as aggregate cut-off marks of 40% in Phase 1 exam to be shortlisted for Phase 2.
- Marks obtained in Phase 1 shall be used only for shortlisting the candidates for Phase 2 examination process and will not be counted for final selection of the candidates.
- Subject to the criteria mentioned at (iii) above, all the candidates who clear Phase 1 shall be shortlisted for Phase 2. List of candidates shortlisted for Phase II will be made available on SEBI website.
SEBI Grade A Exam Analysis – Phase 1 – Paper 1
Taking into consideration the experience of many aspirants who contacted us, Paper 1 can be said to be of easy to moderate difficulty level. If you had a decent level of preparation, Paper-1 was definitely easy for you.
Your choice of questions and accuracy would help you clear Paper 1 of the SEBI Grade A 2022 Phase 1 exam.
The minimum cut off percentage for Paper 1 is 30%. This means you need to secure a minimum of 30% marks in Paper 1 in order to clear the same.
Let us start analysing the Paper section-wise.

The quantitative aptitude section can be said to be of easy difficulty level if you are good at selecting questions. No new topic was asked. If you are a banking aspirant, it would have been an easy section for you.
2. Reasoning

The reasoning section was also a pretty one provided you opted for the right questions to solve. We are saying this because there was no sectional cut off. You would just need the minimum cut off marks for the complete paper.
3. English
English | 1. Reading Comprehension (Chameleon Madagascar) – 6 to7 Questions 2. Find the incorrect statements: 3 Questions 3. Jumbled Sentences – 4 Questions 4. Word Rearrangement – 2 Questions 5. Error detection – 2 to 3 Questions 6. Fill in the blanks – 3 Questions |
The English section was very predictable. No new types of questions were asked.
4. General Awareness
The latest months (January 2022, February 2022, December 2021, November 2021, October 2021) were given the maximum weightage. A few questions were from the economic survey and union budget as well. Overall it was a good mix of questions.

SEBI Grade A Exam Analysis – Phase 1 – Paper 2
Paper 2 was set keeping in mind the syllabus given. We would say that Paper 2 this year was of moderate difficulty level. But if you compare this paper with the last year’s, you might feel that it was on a tougher side this year. Last year the questions asked in Paper 2 were very generic. This year is in 2022, the syllabus was treated as a bible and questions from all the 6 sections were asked. The mix was quite good this year.

Companies Act | Direct questions were asked. Fill in the blanks type and statement based questions were also asked. There was one question on the penalty. All the chapters from the syllabus were covered. | 6-7 |
Economics | Questions from both Micro & Macro Economics were asked. More number of questions were there from Macroeconomics. A few questions were lengthy – statement-based questions). Questions had correct/incorrect statements. Questions had to be read very carefully. Topics covered: BoP, Market Structure, Demand & Supply (numerical), ISLM Curve, Elasticity of Demand. | 7-8 |

As per the reviews and feedback shared by students who took the SEBI Grade A Phase-2 exam on the 27th of Feb 2021, it was evident that the paper was different when we compare it with SEBI Grade A Phase-1 conducted on the 17th of Jan 2021.
What was the overall difficulty level of the exam?
- The paper was of moderate difficulty level. But if you do not have a grip on the fundamentals, you might find it more on the difficult side.
- As the students reported that Descriptive English Writing paper wherein students had to type the answers, was a little troublesome.
- The writing interface was a bit uncomfortable for the students.

There was a good mix of questions in paper-2 from all the sections.

The options given were tricky. You could do it your concepts are clear.
