Himanshu Garg is from Delhi and completed his graduation in B.Com and LLB from Delhi University in 2013 and 2017. He started preparing for banking exams in 2019 and initially appeared for SBI PO and IBPS PO, where he cleared prelims but could not clear mains. When the RBI Assistant notification was released, he decided to focus completely on this exam and scored 97.5 marks in the prelims.
He focused mainly on strengthening his basics and practicing regularly. He attempted a large number of mock tests and carefully analyzed each one to improve his performance. His preparation was based on limited and reliable study resources for each subject.
He gave at least 100 mock tests during prelims and 90 mock tests during mains, which helped him improve speed and accuracy. He focused more on practice rather than revision of already strong subjects. He is now selected as an assistant in the Reserve Bank of India, Delhi region.
Question 1: When did you start preparing for banking exams, and how did your preparation change after the RBI Assistant notification?
Answer: I started preparing for the banking exam in 2019. My first exam was for SBI PO, for which I had cleared the prelims but was not able to clear the mains. After that, I appeared for the IBPS PO, for which I had also cleared the prelims. But, in the meantime, when I was preparing for IBPS PO Mains, suddenly the RBI Assistant notification came, which made me excited and filled me with energy and enthusiasm. From that day onwards I made up my mind, skipped IBPS PO mains, and started preparing only for RBI Assistant. Its prelims exam was held on 14th Feb 2020, in which I scored 97.5 marks.
Question 2: What was your preparation strategy for quantitative aptitude?
Answer: The resource for quantitative aptitude preparation was Quantum CAT by Sarvesh Kumar Verma for arithmetic practice. For data interpretation preparation, the resources used were Oliveboard’s Data Interpretation book and Arun Sharma’s Data Interpretation book, which helped in developing strong exam-level practice.
Question 3: What resources did you use for the reasoning section preparation?
Answer: The preparation strategy for reasoning was to first clear the basics and then practice regularly. The resource used for miscellaneous topics was the MK Pandey book, and the resource used for puzzle practice was Oliveboard’s Puzzle Mania book, which helped in strengthening puzzle-solving ability.

Answer: The resource used for English preparation was Wren and Martin’s English book for grammar improvement. Another resource used was Oliveboard’s Edge course, which helped in learning English topics in detail and improving overall performance in the section.

I had given at least 100 mock tests during the prelims phase and at least 90 mock tests during the mains phase. This helped me in improving my speed, accuracy, and exam performance. Only giving mock tests is not enough; proper analysis of mock tests is also important for identifying mistakes and improving weak areas.
Question 8: What is your advice for aspirants preparing for the RBI Assistant exam?
Answer: If you have good command in core subjects, i.e., Quant, English, and Reasoning, then do not waste time for their revision and start practicing them as much as possible. Practice is the key factor for improving performance and clearing the exam.
