WBCS Selection Process

The Combined Competitive Recruitment Exam of West Bengal Public Service Commission is conducted into three stages. Applicants who are eligible for the exam go for the WBPSC Selection process. The first stage is the Prelims exam which is qualifying in nature. Candidates who qualify the prelims exam, are allowed for the mains exam. The merit list is prepared based on the marks scored in the mains and interview.

WBPSC Selection Process – Stage 1

The WB Civil Service Prelims exam is the first stage of the selection process. Applicants, whoever fill the application form, are called for the Prelims exam. The prelims exam is conducted only for screening of the candidates for mains exam. The marks scored in this test are not added for the merit list.

WBPSC CCE First Stage: Prelims

  • The Preliminary Examination will be of a single paper called General Studies.
  • This paper will be objective type only.
  • There will be 200 multiple choice-type questions in the paper.
  • The prelims paper will carry 200 marks.
  • The time duration will be of 2 hours.

WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern

The prelims exam is the first stage of the West Bengal PSC CCE. The WBCS Prelims Exam Pattern consists of English Composition, General Science, Current events of National & International Importance, History of India, etc. The exam duration for the WBCS prelims exam is 2 hours.

WBPSC Selection Process – Stage 2

The mains exam of West Bengal Civil Service recruitment process, is the second stage. Candidates who qualify the prelims exam, are eligible for the mains exam. The Main Examination will consist of six mandatory tests and one optional subject with two papers (for applicants applying only for groups A and/or B).

  • The WBCS Mains examination consists of a total of 8 papers, including two papers for the optional subject.
  • Each paper carries 200 marks.
  • Each paper has a duration of 3 hours.

WBPSC Selection Process – Stage 3

The third stage of the WBCS selection process is Interview or Personality Test. Candidates who clear the mains cut-off, they get invited for the Interview. This test involves questions on broad interest topics, aiming to assess personal traits such as mental alertness, clear and rational communication, intellectual and moral integrity, leadership abilities, and a diverse range of interests. The final list of recommended candidates is based on the cumulative marks from the Main exam and the personality test.

WBPSC Recruitment: Important Points

  • Candidates for Group ‘B’ Service (West Bengal Police Service) will be specially tested at the interviews with regard to their suitability for the service.
  • A deduction of 10% of full marks may be made from the total marks secured by a candidate in a particular paper if he / she discloses his / her identity by writing his / her name, roll number or by putting any identifying marks inside the answer sheet of that paper.
  • The Commission has discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the papers / subjects and in the aggregate. If a candidate fails to secure qualifying marks in any paper / subject, the marks in that paper / subject will not be considered in calculating his / her aggregate.
