World Fisheries Day Theme 2024

The theme in 2023 was “Build enabling policy environments for small-scale artisanal fisheries.”

This theme emphasizes the crucial role of small-scale fishers in sustainable fisheries management. Small-scale fishers, who often employ traditional and low-impact fishing methods, contribute significantly to local food security and livelihoods. They also possess valuable knowledge and expertise in managing marine resources sustainably.

History of World Fisheries Day

The history of World Fisheries Day can be traced back to 1997 when the World Forum on Fish Harvesters and Fish Workers (WFF) met in New Delhi. This gathering of representatives from 18 countries resulted in the establishment of the World Fisheries Forum and the signing of a declaration advocating for a global mandate of sustainable fishing practices and policies.

In recognition of the growing importance of addressing fisheries issues, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) and the WFF jointly proposed the establishment of an international day dedicated to fisheries. This proposal was subsequently adopted by the FAO General Assembly in 2003, officially designating November 21st as World Fisheries Day.

Since its inception, this day has played a pivotal role in raising global awareness about the critical role of fisheries in food security, nutrition, and livelihoods. It has also been a platform for promoting responsible fisheries management practices, addressing challenges such as overfishing, illegal fishing, and climate change impacts.

Fisheries play a vital role in global food security and nutrition, providing over 20% of the animal protein intake for nearly 3 billion people worldwide. However, overfishing, climate change, and pollution have posed significant threats to the sustainability of fisheries, endangering marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of fishers.

World Fisheries Day serves as a platform to raise awareness about these challenges and promote responsible fisheries management practices that balance conservation with the needs of fishing communities.

Global Fisheries Conference India 2023

In celebration of the contributions and achievements of fishers, fish farmers, and other stakeholders, as well as to reinforce commitment towards the sustainable and equitable development of the fisheries sector, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, is organizing the Global Fisheries Conference India 2023, on the occasion of World Fisheries Day. This two-day event occurred on the 21st and 22nd of November 2023 at the Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad.

The theme for the two-day event was ‘Celebrate the Fisheries and Aquaculture Wealth.’

India’s Fisheries Sector

The fisheries sector is recognized as a sunrise sector with tremendous potential for fostering equitable and inclusive growth through the economic empowerment of vulnerable sections of society. With an 8% share in global fish production, India ranks as the world’s third-largest fish producer, second-largest aquaculture producer, largest shrimp producer, and fourth-largest seafood exporter.

The Indian fisheries sector has experienced consistent growth, and the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying is committed to sustaining this progress. The goal is not only to achieve the targets set by the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) for 22 million metric tons of fish production but also to reach Rs 1 lakh crore in exports by the fiscal year 2024-25. The sector has played a vital role in providing sustainable incomes and livelihoods to the country’s 3 crore fishers and fish farmers.

Inland fish production, exports, and aquaculture, particularly in inland fisheries, have shown significant growth, contributing to over 70% of the total fish production. This achievement results from collaborative efforts between the central government, state/union territories, and beneficiaries across various domains.

This global celebration emphasizes the pivotal role played by small-scale fishers in safeguarding food security and livelihoods for millions worldwide.
