What Is UJALA?

The full form of UJALA is “Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All ”. The UJALA YOJNA targets to replace nearly 77 crore ordinary bulbs with LED bulbs. The “Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All ” was launched and implemented through 2015 to overcome the heavy costs of LEDs, which would have previously been quite a barrier to the implementation of energy-efficient systems. In this scheme, the LED bulbs are being provided for only 10 INR. The program was approved to set up LED distribution in phases across the country to provide people with LED bulbs instead of ordinary lightbulbs and energy-efficient appliances. The scheme aims to promote effective and efficient power usage and provide power to remote areas, raise awareness about using utility equipment, reduce power bills for every consumer, and protect the environment. Under the Ujala scheme, every power consumer with a utility connection provided by their Electricity Distribution authorities can obtain LED bulbs for less than the market price.

Under the Rural Ujala Scheme, 60 crores LED lights are being provided to about 20 crore rural homes.

Each family in the community would be receiving three to four LED lights at a cost of Rs 10 per bulb under this scheme.

19 Mar 2021 ( The Economics Times) stated that Convergence Energy Services Ltd (CESL), a state-run EESL subsidiary, inaugurated the Gram Ujala yojna, under which power LED bulbs are being distributed for Rs 10 per piece in five states during the first phase. The initial phase of this initiative would provide 15 million LED lights to villages in Aarah (Bihar), Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Nagpur (Maharashtra), and western Gujarat.

Objectives Of UJALA Yojana

The UJALA YOJNA, also known as the LED-based domestic efficient lighting program (DELP), aims to improve energy efficiency for all, including usage, costs, and illumination to remote and commercial areas. This scheme is identified as the largest program globally and aims to promote the efficient use of energy at the residential level.

The yojna also aspires to raise consumer understanding of the advantages of adopting energy-efficient equipment while coordinating and assisting the demands to minimize the initial price range, allowing for greater adoption of LED lighting by domestic consumers.

Under the UJALA initiative, LED lights will be delivered at a subsidized rate for every consumer who has a metered connection. The government will do this in collaboration with the electricity department of the user’s locality.

Benefits Of UJALA Yojana

In UJALA YOJNA, every consumer with an energy measuring meter can obtain low-cost LED bulbs from their Electricity department at around 40% of the actual price. Any faulty bulbs are also replaced by the department, as and when required.

Implementation Of UJALA Yojana

The UJALA YOJNA has been successfully implemented in all the major residential areas across the country. In regards to making investments and taking risks, these aspects were successfully and fully implemented in the Ujala Yojna. The program was introduced as a collaborative effort between EESL and DISCOM, and the following are some of the results obtained by this scheme.

By using LED lights to replace 200 million fluorescent bulbs, up to 5000 MW of load was reduced.
Given environmental and global climate change advisories, the government’s initiative reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 79 million tons of carbon dioxide.

Eligibility For UJALA Yojana

Under the UJALA YOJNA, any domestic home with a meter for billing power usage is entitled to receive LED bulbs from its respective Electricity Distribution Company. Consumers could purchase the LED on EMI (month-to-month or in installments duly mentioned in their power consumption receipts) or on initial payment of the amount. Following documents are required to get the UJALA LED bulbs:

1) Copy of their electricity bill

2) Copy of an authorized ID proof: For EMI payments

UJALA Yojana In Malaysia

Following the initial execution of the UJALA YOJNA in India, this program was also introduced on September 6, 2017, in Malacca, Malaysia. The then-Chief Minister of Melaka launched the UJALA YOJNA for the betterment of the citizens of that country. The main goal of this strategy was to reduce power use to minimize the impact on users. Preserving the environment was another goal achieved and intended by this scheme.
