In a significant milestone achieved on August 21, 2023, the long-awaited project of permanently diverting the course of the Paravanar river has reached its successful conclusion. This endeavor involved completing a substantial 10.5-kilometer stretch out of the total 12 kilometers. Notably, NLCIL took up the responsibility for the remaining 1.5 kilometers, effectively initiating this critical phase from July 26, 2023.
Paravanar River Course: Ensuring Protection and Progress
The significance of this accomplishment is underscored by the Paravanar river’s crucial role in managing stormwater across an expansive area of over 100 square kilometers, encompassing the northwest and southern regions. The preservation of villages and safeguarding of agricultural lands from inundation during periods of heavy and continuous rainfall are paramount concerns. Recognizing these responsibilities, NLCIL proactively undertook the task of establishing a permanent diversion of the Paravanar river. This initiative aims to ensure not only the safety of communities but also the ongoing development of the region.
Empowering Agriculture and Groundwater
Covering an approximate area of 18 hectares for the entire 12-kilometer diversion, this endeavor holds immense significance. NLCIL’s existing mines have been instrumental in facilitating year-round irrigation across multiple acres of land through the utilization of Paravanar river water. The establishment of a permanent river course further enhances agricultural prospects by providing irrigation to additional areas. Moreover, the consistent flow of water in the Paravanar river contributes to the augmentation of groundwater resources in the region, supporting sustainable water management and agricultural growth.
