United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction is held annually on 13
October since 1989.

  • The day is celebrated to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction and also celebrates how people and communities around the world are reducing their exposure to disasters and raising awareness about the importance of reining in the risks that they face.
  • The theme of 2021 International Day for Disaster Reduction is “International cooperation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses”.

National News

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi addressed the 28th NHRC Foundation Day
programme, through video conferencing on October 12, 2021, in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and NHRC chairperson.

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India is a Statutory public body constituted on 12 October 1993 under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, for the promotion and protection of human rights and dignity of the marginalised.
  • Chairperson of NHRC is Justice Arun Kumar Mishra.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched the 2021 State of the Education Report (SOER) for India: “No Teacher, No Class”, on the occasion of World Teacher’s Day, on October 05, 2021.

  • The third edition of the annual flagship State of Education Report of UNESCO New Delhi. The substance of the Report has been developed by an expert team of researchers in the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, under the guidance of the UNESCO New Delhi.
  • The 2021 edition focused on the theme of teachers, teaching and teacher education.
  • The report also looked at teachers’ experience of ICT and the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the teaching profession.

Gautam Adani-led Adani Group took over the responsibilities of the Jaipur International Airport on October 11, 2021.

  • Airports Authority of India has leased the airport to Adani Group for a period of 50 years.
  • Adani Airports will work on the operations, management and development of the Jaipur airport through PPP mode.
  • The first flight after the take over was from Delhi to Jaipur.
  • The group will take over the control of entire facility except for cargo terminal, Air Traffic Control (ATC) and Communication, Navigation & Surveillance (CNS), which will continue to be operated by AAI.
  • The private group Adani will have to develop their own cargo terminal.

State News

Delhi government has launched a mentorship programme called ‘Desh Ke Mentor’, for children studying in Classes IX to XII of state government schools.

  • Under the ‘Desh Ke Mentor’ programme, students will be mentored by professionals and academicians from across the country for 10-15 minutes daily on issues ranging from career choices to teenage-related concerns.
  • The mentorship programme will be for two to six months.
  • The first two months of the programme will be a compulsory module and the remaining four will be optional.
  • Mentors will guide two-five students each to help the students in their overall personality development by sharing their knowledge, skills and expertise.

Assam In News

  • GOI has signed a tripartite peace accord with the State government of Assam and five insurgent groups from the Karbi Anglong region in Assam, to end decades of violence in the region. A special development package of Rs 1000 crore will be released by the state and centre government over the next five years for undertaking specific projects for development of Karbi areas.
  • CM Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone of the first-ever Bamboo Industrial Park of the Northeast in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER Ministry) at an estimated cost at Rs. 50 crores, over an area covering 75 hectares.
  • World’s first genetically modified (GM) rubber plant has been planted by Rubber Board on June 22, 2021, at the board’s farm in Sarutari near Guwahati. GM rubber sapling was developed at the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), in Puthuppally, Kottayam, Kerala.
  • Guardian Ministers’ to oversee the implementation of government policy decisions, administrative reforms, and other welfare schemes in all the 34 districts of the state.

Jhunjhunwala’s Akasa Air gets NOC from Aviation Ministry, plans flights from mid-2022

  • Billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala-backed Akasa Airlines has received the No Objection Certificate (\ OC) from the Vinistry of Civil Aviation.
  • The airline will fly under the brand name ‘Akasa Air’ and former Jet Airways CEO Vinay Dube will be the new airline’s CEO. The airline will now seek a license from the DGCA for operating from the summer of 2022.

Banking News

RBI on October 12 issued a small finance bank licence to the consortium of Centrum Financial Services Limited (Centrum), and Resilient Innovations Private Limited (BharatPe), Centrum said in an exchange filing.

  • The new entity will take over the assets and liabilities of Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative Bank.
  • Centrum’s MSME and Micro Finance businesses will be merged into Unity Small Finance Bank.

RBI in News

  • Reserve Bank of India on Tuesday banned chartered accountant firm Haribhakti & Co LLP from undertaking any type of audit assignments for regulated entities for a period of two years starting April 1, 2022.
  • Banking sector regulator has taken this action against the firm for failure to comply with a specific direction issued by the RBI with respect to its statutory audit of a Systemically Important Non-Banking Financial Company
  • NBFCs whose asset size is of ₹ 500 cr or more as per last audited balance sheet are considered as systemically important NBFCs.

World football governing body, FIFA unveiled the official mascot of the U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 on October 11, 2021.

  • The mascot named “IBHA” is an Asiatic lioness representing women power.

  • The tournament will be the 7th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. It will be held in India from October 11-30, 2022

BharatPe has appointed former State Bank of India Chairman Rajnish Kumar as the Chairman of its board, on October 12, 2021.

  • As the Chairman, Kumar will be responsible to:
  • Mentor the BharatPe team in formulating a short-term and long-term strategy
  • Work closely with the board and executives on regulatory matters
  • Advise and counsel the management on corporate governance
  • Kumar served as the Chairman of the country’s largest lender SBI from October 2017 to October 2020

Former secretary (HRD), information and broadcasting (I&B), Amit Khare, an IAS officer of the 1985 batch, was appointed as the advisor to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

  • Khare retired as the secretary (higher education) on September 30.

Obituary

Chairman of Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), Sardar Balvinder Singh Nakai, has passed away.

  • He was 87 years old.
  • BS Nakai was appointed as the new Chairman of IFFCO in May 2019.
  • IFFCO is a multi-state cooperative society engaged in the business of manufacturing and marketing of fertilisers. Its headquarter is in New Delhi.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, the man regarded as the “Father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb”, has passed away, He was 85.

  • The atomic scientist, Dr Khan was hailed as a national hero for transforming Pakistan into the world’s first Islamic nuclear power and for his contributions in enhancing the country’s defence capabilities.
