AIIB, ADB to co-finance USD 2 billion loan for India’s fight against COVID-19

  • The co-finance facility will provide loan for India to procure COVID-19 vaccines under ADB’s Asia Pacific Vaccine Access Facility (APVAX).
  • AIIB is considering providing USD 500 million and the ADB is expected to finance USD 1.5 billion.
  • About 667 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines were expected to be procured through the loan.

13th Meeting of Heads of NSOs of BRICS Countries was held

  • The 13th Meeting of Heads of National Statistical Offices of BRICS countries was held in virtual format under the Chairship of India on 28th October 2021.
  • The theme of meeting was “NSOs efforts in monitoring Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”.
  • Dr. G. P. Samanta, Chief Statistician of India and Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), Government of India chaired the meeting.
  • During the meeting, the Joint Statistical Publication (JSP) 2021 and JSPSnapshot 2021 for BRICS Countries were released.

Indian Navy’s stealth frigate Tushil launched in Russia

  • The first of two additional Krivak or Talwar class stealth frigates, Tushil, being built in Russia for the Indian Navy, was formally launched.
  • It is part of four follow-on frigates contracted by India from Russia, of which two are being built by Russia and two are under construction in India through technology transfer.
  • Tushil is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘protector shield’.

Nirmala Sitharaman attends G20 health, finance ministers meet in Rome

  • The joint meeting of the G-20 health and finance ministers in Rome was held on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on October 30-31.
  • G20 is a major international grouping that brings together 19 of the world’s major economies and the European Union, with its members accounting for more than 80 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of global trade and 60 per cent of the global population.
  • The joint meeting of the G-20 health and finance ministers in Rome was held on the eve of the G20 Leaders’ Summit on October 30-31.
  • Sitharaman participated in the G-20 ministerial meet for discussion on long-term challenges in pandemic prevention, preparedness and response and strengthening global health financing governance.
  • G20 is a major international grouping that brings together 19 of the world’s major economies and the European Union, with its members accounting for more than 80 per cent of global GDP, 75 per cent of global trade and 60 per cent of the global population.

India, ADB sign USD 251 mn loan for urban flood management in Chennai

  • The Government of India and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed a USD 251 million loan for climate-resilient, integrated urban flood protection and management in the Chennai-Kosasthalaiyar basin to strengthen the resilience of Chennai city to floods.
  • Asian Development Bank HQ: Manila, Philippines; President: Masatsugu Asakawa.
  • Department of Economic Affairs Additional Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra and ADB India Resident Mission Country Director Takeo Konishi signed the pact.
  • The project will construct 588 kilometres of new stormwater drains, rehabilitate or replace 175 km of stormwater drains, improve 11 km stretches in the Ambattur, Ariyallur, Kadappakkam, and Korattur channels to enhance water-carrying capacity, and upgrade a stormwater pumping station and construct a new one

Government reappoints Shaktikanta Das as RBI Governor for 3-years

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the reappointment of Shaktikanta Das as Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years.
  • The re-appointment is effective from December 10, 2021, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
  • Mr. Das was directly associated with the preparation of as many as 8 Union Budgets.
