India Commences Exercise HARIMAU SHAKTI 2023 with Malaysia

On 23rd October, the joint bilateral training exercise “Exercise Harimau Shakti 2023” began in Umroi Cantonment, involving the Indian and Malaysian armies. The Malaysian Army contingent is composed of soldiers from the 5th Royal Battalion of the Malaysian Army, while the Indian contingent is represented by a Battalion of The Rajput Regiment. The previous edition of this exercise took place in Pulai, Kluang, Malaysia, in November 2022.

Exercise Harimau Shakti is a joint military exercise between the Indian Army and the Malaysian Army. It is held annually. Its purpose is to enhance interoperability and cooperation between the two armies. The exercise typically includes a variety of training activities, such as field training exercises, command post exercises, and joint planning exercises.

Background

Exercise Harimau Shakti was first conducted in 2012 in Pulai, Kluang, Malaysia.

The exercise was initiated by the Indian Army and the Malaysian Army with the aim of enhancing interoperability and cooperation between the two armies, particularly in jungle warfare and counter-insurgency operations.

Over the years, Exercise Harimau Shakti has grown in scope and complexity. The exercise now includes a variety of training activities, such as field training exercises, command post exercises, and joint planning exercises.

Ex Harimau Shakti

Ex Harimau Shakti, set to continue until November 5, 2023, will involve around 120 personnel from both sides. Its primary objective is to bolster military capabilities for the execution of Multi Domain Operations in a sub-conventional setting. Throughout the exercise, both contingents will create a Joint Command Post and set up an integrated surveillance network, along with a Joint Surveillance Centre.

Drills & Training

Both sides will practice the deployment of joint forces in jungle, semi-urban, and urban environments. Furthermore, they will rehearse drills for intelligence collection, collation, and dissemination. The exercise will also involve the use of Drones/UAVs and Helicopters. Both sides will conduct casualty management and evacuation exercises. Additionally, logistics management discussions and survival training at the Battalion level will be part of the training.

Objectives

The training will emphasize a high level of physical fitness, tactical-level drills, and the exchange of best practices between the two contingents. The exercise will conclude with a 48-hour validation exercise in a semi-urban area.

“Exercise HARIMAU SHAKTI” aims to elevate defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the Malaysian Army, further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations.
