India – Sri Lanka Joint Exercise MITRA SHAKTI 2023 Commenced

The ninth edition of the Joint Military exercise, “Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023,” has commenced today in Aundh, Pune. The exercise is scheduled to take place from the 16th to the 29th of November 2023.

Participating Contingents at the Ex-Mitra Shakti

The Indian contingent, comprising 120 personnel, is primarily represented by troops from the MARATHA LIGHT INFANTRY Regiment. The Sri Lankan side is represented by personnel from the 53 Infantry Division. Additionally, 15 personnel from the Indian Air Force and five personnel from the Sri Lankan Air Force are also participating in the exercise.

About Excercise MITRA SHAKTI

Objectives

The objective of the exercise is to jointly rehearse the conduct of Sub-Conventional Operations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.

Scope

The scope of the exercise includes synergizing joint responses during counter-terrorist operations.

Exercise Operations

Both sides will practice tactical actions such as raids, search and destroy missions, heliborne operations, etc. Additionally, the exercise curriculum will include Army Martial Arts Routine (AMAR), combat reflex shooting, and Yoga.

New Drills & Operations

Exercise MITRA SHAKTI – 2023 will also involve the use of drones and Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems, in addition to helicopters. Drills to secure helipads and undertake casualty evacuation during counter-terrorist operations will also be rehearsed jointly by both sides. Collective efforts will focus on achieving an enhanced level of interoperability among the troops and reducing the risk to life and property while keeping the interests and agenda of the UN at the forefront during peacekeeping operations.

Significance of the Excercise MITRA SHAKTI

The mutual exchange of views and practices during joint drills on a wide spectrum of combat skills will facilitate participants to learn from each other. The sharing of best practices is expected to enhance the level of defense cooperation between the Indian Army and the Sri Lankan Army. The exercise is also anticipated to strengthen bilateral relations between the two neighboring nations.
