India-USA Joint Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR 2023 Commenced

The 14th Edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise, known as “VAJRA PRAHAR 2023,” kicked off at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, on November 21.

Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR is a collaborative effort between the Indian Army and the US Army Special Forces. Its primary objectives include the exchange of best practices and experiences, particularly in joint mission planning and operational tactics.

Over time, Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR has become a valuable platform for the Special Forces of both nations to exchange ideas and share expertise. The exercise plays a crucial role in improving interoperability and fostering stronger defense cooperation between the armies of India and the United States of America.

Participating Contingents

The US contingent participating in Exercise VAJRA PRAHAR comprises personnel from the 1st Special Forces Group (SFG) of the US Special Forces. On the Indian side, the contingent is led by Special Forces personnel from the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. This collaborative effort allows both forces to jointly train and enhance their capabilities.

Background

The inaugural edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise, VAJRA PRAHAR, took place in 2010 in India. Subsequently, the 13th edition was conducted at the Special Forces Training School (SFTS), Bakloh (Himachal Pradesh). The ongoing 14th edition is being held at Umroi Cantonment, Meghalaya, spanning from November 21 to December 11, 2023. These exercises serve as valuable platforms for the exchange of best practices and experiences between the Special Forces of both nations, fostering interoperability and strengthening defense cooperation.

Drills Included in the VAJRA PRAHAR Exercise

Over the next three weeks, the Indian and US contingents will collaboratively plan and execute a range of specialized operations, counter-terrorist maneuvers, and airborne exercises within simulated conventional and unconventional scenarios, particularly in mountainous terrain. Notable elements of the training include ‘Combat free fall insertion of troops from stand-off distances,’ ‘Waterborne insertion of troops,’ ‘Precision engagement of targets at long ranges,’ ‘Combat air controlling of fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft,’ as well as ‘Airborne insertion and sustenance of troops.’ These exercises aim to enhance the capabilities and interoperability of both Special Forces units.
