In 2019, 193 UNESCO Member States unanimously established the International Day against Violence and Bullying at School Including Cyberbullying, recognizing that school-related violence in all its forms is an infringement of children and adolescents’ rights to health and education. 

School violence is widespread, can be physical, psychological, and sexual, and includes gender-based violence, bullying, and cyberbullying.

Background

This designation recognizes that all forms of school-related violence infringe upon the rights of children and adolescents to education, as well as their health and well-being. On this day, Member States, UN partners, international and regional organizations, and civil society, including non-governmental organizations, individuals, and various stakeholders, are called upon to support, celebrate, and facilitate this international day.

The International Day against Violence and Bullying at School, Including Cyberbullying encourages learners, parents, members of educational communities, education authorities, and a range of sectors and partners, including the tech industry, to collaborate in preventing all forms of violence and promoting safe learning environments. These environments are essential for the health, well-being, and effective learning of children and youth, emphasizing the collective responsibility of society to create safe and nurturing educational settings.
