Politics plays a huge role in our country and society in general, especially now when the elections are fast approaching. Naturally, your SSC CPO syllabus will also cover some portions of this subject. Political Parties in India

  1. All India Trinamool Congress (TMC)

The All India Trinamool Congress also referred to as Trinamool Congress, is a political party based in West Bengal. Its founder and leader is Smt. Mamata Banerjee, who is also serving as the Chief Minister of the state. After the 2014 general elections, it has become the fourth largest party in the Lok Sabha with 34 seats. Trinamool is currently present in three states, which makes it a national political party- Tripura, Kerala, and Manipur. Additionally, Mamata Banerjee is the first and the only woman Chief Minister of the state to win two consecutive tenures. This party revolves around the ideologies of anti-communism, democratic socialism, secularism, civic nationalism, and regionalism.

  1. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

Bharatiya Janata Party, commonly known as BJP, is currently one of the two major political parties in India, the other being the Indian National Congress. Presently, it is the biggest national party in the country when it comes to representation in state assemblies and national parliament. Additionally, BJP is also the world’s biggest political party when it comes to primary membership. It was founded in 1951 by Shyamaprasad Mukherjee and is currently presided over by Amit Shah. Its parliamentary chairperson is Narendra Modi, who is also the Prime Minister of India. It follows the ideologies of right-wing populism, economic nationalism, social conservatism, national conservatism, integral humanism, and Hindu nationalism.

  1. Communist Party of India (Marxist Party) (CPIM)

As the name suggests, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) revolves around the ideology of Communism and was founded in 1964. It came into existence after splitting from Communist Party of India. Sitaram Yechury is presently serving as its Secretary-General. Currently, it has formed the state government in Kerala and has elected members in the eight following state assemblies-

  • West Bengal
  • Kerala
  • Himachal Pradesh
  • Tripura
  • Maharashtra
  • Jammu and Kashmir
  • Odisha
  • Rajasthan

Additionally, it is also leading the West Bengal Left Front as of now. It follows the ideologies of Marxism-Leninism and communism.

  1. National Congress Party (NCP)

Tariq Anwar, P.A. Sangma, and Sharad Pawar founded the National Congress Party on May 25, 1999. They formed this party after they were ejected from the Indian National Congress, for questioning the right of Sonia Gandhi to be the leader of the party. Its current President is Sharad Pawar, who also serves as the Rajya Sabha Leader. On the other hand, Supriya Sule is the Lok Sabha leader. The NCP revolves around the ideologies of secularism, socialism, social equality, social justice, civic nationalism, and Indian nationalism.

  1. Indian National Congress

Founded on 28th December 1885 by Dinshaw Wacha, Dadabhai Nairoji and Octavian Hume, the Indian National Congress is one of the two biggest political parties right now. Its current President is Rahul Gandhi, who is also running for Prime Minister and the Parliamentary Chairperson is Sonia Gandhi. The Indian National Congress revolves around the ideologies of progressivism, secularism, Gandhian socialism, Swadeshi movement, Hindu left, Indian nationalism, social liberalism, democratic socialism, and social democracy.
