Human Rights Conference

In a significant event on September 20, 2023, the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, inaugurated the Annual General Meeting and Biennial Conference of the Asia Pacific Forum on Human Rights in New Delhi.

Harmonizing Human Rights and Nature

President Murmu, in her address, emphasized the need to integrate the cause of human rights with the urgent call to heal the Earth wounded by human actions. She reiterated India’s belief in the divinity of every element in the universe and called for a rekindling of our love for nature to preserve and nurture it before it’s too late.

President Murmu acknowledged that human beings possess both the power to create and destroy. Scientific studies have sounded the alarm, indicating that our planet is now in the throes of a sixth extinction, where ongoing destruction caused by human activities threatens not only humanity but all life on Earth. She stressed that beyond codified laws, it is a moral obligation of the international community to comprehensively safeguard human rights.

Environment and Climate Change in Focus

The President expressed her satisfaction with one dedicated session of the conference centered around the vital topics of the environment and climate change. She expressed confidence that the conference’s outcomes would lead to a comprehensive declaration, driving progress for the well-being of humanity and the planet.

Empowering Gender Justice and Representation

President Murmu underscored India’s unwavering commitment to gender justice, highlighting the adoption of universal adult franchise from the inception of the Republic. This inclusive approach has catalyzed numerous silent revolutions in the realms of gender justice and the protection of life and dignity. Notably, India has ensured a minimum of 33 percent reservation for women in local bodies’ elections, with a proposal to extend similar reservation for women in state assemblies and the national Parliament now taking shape, promising a transformative revolution for gender justice.

India’s Dedication to Learning and Collaboration

President Murmu conveyed India’s eagerness to glean insights from global best practices, viewing the enhancement of human rights as an ongoing endeavor. She underscored the pivotal role of the Asia Pacific Region Forum in fostering international consensus through dialogues and consultations with human rights institutions and stakeholders worldwide.

Inaugurating this conference, President Smt Droupadi Murmu reaffirmed India’s commitment to upholding human rights and championing environmental conservation, signaling the nation’s dedication to these critical global causes.
