[Video] What is National Bamboo Mission?

Video above discussing all the key points of National Bamboo Mission with RBI Grade B and NABARD Grade A exams in focus. Below is the summary of the video:

About the National Bamboo Mission (NBM):
It was restructured and relaunched in April 2018 by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs to strengthen India’s green economy, promote bamboo cultivation, and support processing and marketing across 24 states and union territories.

Support to Farmers & MSMEs:
The mission provides financial assistance, formation of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and skill development. Bamboo acts as an essential raw material for MSMEs, reducing import dependency (especially for incense sticks/agarbatti).

Achievements so far:
Under NBM, 48 national nurseries (14 accredited), 60,000 hectares of non-forest land brought under cultivation, 114 treatment units, 528 processing units, and 130 market infrastructure facilities have been set up.

India’s Position in Bamboo Sector:
India has 13.96 million hectares under bamboo cultivation (as of Dec 2024), making it the second-richest country after China, with 136 species (125 indigenous, 11 exotic). Bamboo demand is rising worldwide across furniture, textiles, energy, food, and herbal medicine industries.

Objectives & Impact:
The mission focuses on regional strategies, improving quality planting material, post-harvest management, and market linkages. It aims to boost the bamboo-based industry, generate rural employment, empower women, and enhance India’s contribution to climate change resilience and carbon sequestration under the Paris Agreement.
