More About the News

Bharat has taken significant steps to align with the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) recommendations and testing and calibration procedures for weights and measures. Reports prepared by the Legal Metrology’s Regional Reference Standards Laboratories (RRSLs) in India are now recognized and accepted by OIML issuing authorities.

Benefits for India

  • Bharat has become an authority for issuing OIML pattern approval certificates, which is a major boon for domestic manufacturers.
  • Indigenous manufacturers can now export their weighing and measuring instruments worldwide without incurring additional testing fees, leading to substantial cost savings.
  • Bharat can also assist foreign manufacturers by issuing OIML pattern approval certificates through its certified RRSLs.
  • This not only benefits foreign manufacturers but also generates foreign exchange through fees and other contributions.

Furthermore, Bharat’s involvement in OIML allows it to influence OIML’s policies and provide input into the OIML Strategy. This system enables OIML certificates issued by OIML Issuing Authorities in OIML Member States to be accepted by other participants as the basis for issuing national or regional type approvals for measuring instruments. This streamlines the certification process and reduces the need for expensive testing facilities for other OIML Member States.

Significance of OIML Certificates

Bharat has achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the 13th country worldwide to be authorized to issue OIML approval certificates. This prestigious status places India among an exclusive group of nations known for their commitment to quality standards and international trade facilitation.

The announcement of Bharat’s achievement was made by Secretary (Consumer Affairs), Shri Rohit Kumar Singh, during a press conference. The presentation and video showcased the significance of this accomplishment, highlighting India’s dedication to maintaining high-quality standards.

This achievement reflects Bharat’s commitment to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of weights and measures in both domestic and international markets.
