Award

2021 Nobel Prize in Physics will be given on October 05, 2021

  • Half of the award has been given jointly to US-based Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann of Germany “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming”
  • The other half of the award has been conferred to Giorgio Parisi from Italy “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
  • Prize amount: 10 million Swedish kronor.

2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine

  • Two American scientists David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian have jointly won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine on October 04, 2021.
  • They have been honoured for the discovery of receptors in the skin that sense temperature and touch and could pave the way for new pain-killers.
  • The prestigious award comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million)

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu confers Assam Government’s biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and National Contribution on 3 awardees

The three awardees are:
1. Members of Assam branch of Kasturba Gandhi National Memorial Trust
2. German-based Assamese litterateur Dr. Nirod Kumar Barooah
3. Members of Shillong Chamber Choir at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra

  • The biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award was instituted by the Government of Assam in 1993 in memory of the first Chief Minister of Assam Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
  • It carries prize money of Rs 5 lakh, a citation and an angavastram.

International News

Tax Inspectors Without Borders (TIWB) has launched its programme in Seychelles

  • India has been chosen as the Partner Administration for this programme. The country will be providing its Tax Expert in support of the initiative.
  • The focus of the 12-month programme will be on Transfer Pricing cases of tourism and financial services sectors.
  • TIWB is a joint initiative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), since its launch in 2015.

National News

PM Modi inaugurates ‘Azadi@75 – New Urban India: Transforming Urban Landscape’ Conference-cum-Expo in Lucknow Indira Gandhi Pratishthan

  • The theme of the three-day event is “New Urban India”. It will culminate on October 07, 2021.
  • The Conference-cum-Expo is organised by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
  • The Conference-cum-Expo is a platform to showcase the prospective transformative urban missions and highlight the achievements and the flagship urban development missions undertaken in the past 7 years of the Modi government.
  • PM virtually handed over keys of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) houses to 75,000 beneficiaries in 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh and interacted with beneficiaries of the scheme of Uttar Pradesh.
  • PM inaugurated and laid the foundation stone of 75 urban development projects of the state under Smart Cities Mission and AMRUT.
  • He flagged off 75 buses under FAME-II for seven cities including Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Jhansi and Ghaziabad.
  • PM announced the setting up of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Chair in Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow.

The first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged sweet dish Mihidana, from West Bengal has been exported to the Kingdom of Bahrain.

  • This initiative is part of the effort to promote indigenous & Geographical Identification (GI) tagged products of India globally.
  • The product was exported by APEDA registered M/S DM Enterprises, Kolkata.
  • West Bengal’s Bardhaman got the GI tag for the Mihidana sweetmeats in 2017.

Defence Exercise

The fifth edition of India – Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX, between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), will be held in the Arabian Sea from 06 to 08 October 2021.

  • JIMEX series of exercises commenced in January 2012 with a special focus on maritime security cooperation. JIMEX-21 aims to develop a common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through the conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations.

Appointment

On October 04, 2021, the Parliament of Japan voted for former Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida to become the new Prime Minister of the country.

  • The 64-year-old Kishida received 257 votes, from 249 parliament members to be sworn in as the 100th Prime Minister of the country.
  • He replaces Yoshihide Suga, who submitted his resignation along with his entire cabinet on October 04, 2021.

Crypto exchange CoinDCX roped in Amitabh Bachchan as brand ambassador to spread awareness about cryptocurrencies.

  • Through this collaboration, CoinDCX wants to increase awareness around crypto and popularise it as an emerging asset class.

Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Abiy Ahmed has been sworn in for a second five-year term on October 04, 2021.

  • Mr Abiy, the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize winner, is serving as prime minister of Ethiopia since 2018.
  • He was administered the oath of office by Supreme Court Chief Justice Meaza Ashenafi.

Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has been sworn in as the Interim President of the coastal West African country of Guinea

  • Doumbouy, led the military coup on September 05, 2021, to overthrow 83-year-old President Alpha Conde.
  • Doumbouya will serve as transitional president until the country returns to civilian rule.

B C Patnaik has taken charge as the managing director (MD) of the Life Insurance Corporation of India.

  • He was appointed as Managing Director vide a government notification dated July 5, 2021.
  • Prior to taking charge as MD of LIC, Patnaik was the Secretary-General, Council for Insurance Ombudsman, (CIO) Mumbai.

Committee

Ministry of Labour has reconstituted the Expert Group on Fixation of Minimum Wages and National Floor Wages.

  • The nine-member new committee will now be headed by the economist and statistician SP Mukherjee (emeritus professor at the University of Kolkata).
  • Earlier in June 2021, government had constituted this committee under the Chairmanship of Professor Ajit Mishra (director of the Institute of Economic Growth).
  • The new expert group has been constituted for a period of three years.
  • Expert group is expected to look into international best practices on wages and evolve a scientific criteria and methodology for fixation of wage in the country.
