International Day of Care and Support Theme 2024

As of today, the theme for the International Day of Care and Support 2024 has not been announced yet.

The theme in 2023 was “Care: Driving a Fair and Inclusive Recovery”.

This theme emphasized the importance of care as a central pillar of a fair and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. It also highlighted the need to invest in care systems and to recognize and value the contributions of caregivers.

History of International Day of Care and Support

The International Day of Care and Support was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2023, following a resolution that was co-sponsored by more than 100 countries. The resolution recognized the essential role of care and support in all its forms in promoting human well-being, sustainable development, and gender equality.

The history of the day can be traced back to the early 2000s when several trade unions and civil society organizations began to campaign for a global day to recognize and celebrate the work of caregivers. In 2016, the ILO launched the Care Agenda, which called for increased investment in care and support systems and the recognition and valuation of unpaid care work.

The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the importance of care and support, as caregivers played a vital role in the response to the pandemic. In recognition of their contributions, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the first International Day of Care and Support on October 29, 2023.

Significance of World Day of Care and Support

  • It raises awareness of the importance of care and support in all its forms, including unpaid care work, paid care work, and formal care services.

  • It advocates for policies and initiatives that support and enhance care and support systems.
  • It promotes a fair and inclusive recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, recognizing that care is a central pillar of a sustainable recovery.
