In a fitting tribute to the iconic actress Madhuri Dixit, the 54th International Film Festival of India bestowed upon her the ‘Special Recognition for Contribution to Bharatiya Cinema’ Award. With an illustrious career spanning four remarkable decades, Madhuri Dixit has made an indelible mark on the Indian film industry.
The announcement of the award was made during the inaugural function of the 54th IFFI held at Panaji, Goa, on 20th November, by Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, MoS Information & Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan, and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

The ‘Special Recognition for Contribution to Bharatiya Cinema’ Award serves as a tribute to Madhuri Dixit’s extraordinary achievements and her lasting impact on Indian cinema. As a leading actress in Hindi movies of the 1980s, 90s, and early 2000s, she garnered six Filmfare Awards and holds the record for fourteen nominations for the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Dixit made her film debut in ‘Abodh’ (1984) and gained widespread recognition with ‘Tezaab’ (1988). In 2014, she was appointed the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in India.

Early Life and Education
Madhuri Dixit was born on May 15, 1967, in Bombay (present-day Mumbai), India. Her family was of Marathi descent. She has two older sisters and an older brother. Dixit was a bright student and excelled in academics. She was also interested in dance and began training in Kathak at an early age.
Dixit attended Divine Child High School in Mumbai and later pursued a degree in Microbiology from Mumbai University. However, she dropped out of college after six months to pursue her acting career.
Acting Career
Dixit made her acting debut in the 1984 film Abodh. However, she did not achieve widespread recognition until her role in the 1988 film Tezaab. The film was a commercial success and established Dixit as a leading Bollywood actress.
Over the next two decades, Dixit starred in a number of successful films, including Dil (1990), Beta (1992), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), and Devdas (2002). She won four Filmfare Awards for Best Actress for her performances in Dil, Beta, Hum Aapke Hain Koun..!, and Dil To Pagal Hai.
Dixit took a break from acting in 2002 to focus on her family. She returned to acting in 2007 with the film Aaja Nachle. She has since starred in a number of other films, including Gulaab Gang (2014), Bucket List (2018), Total Dhamaal (2019), and Kalank (2019).
Dancing Career
Dixit is a skilled Kathak dancer. She began training in Kathak at an early age and performed in numerous dance recitals throughout her childhood. She has also incorporated her dancing skills into her films, often performing elaborate dance sequences.
Dixit has won several awards for her dancing, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Kathak in 2001. She has also performed Kathak internationally, including at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002.
Personal Life
Dixit is married to Shriram Nene, a cardiovascular surgeon. They have two sons. Dixit and her family live in Los Angeles, California.
