Renowned Nuclear Physicist Bikash Sinha Passed Away

Bikash Sinha, a distinguished nuclear physicist renowned for his work, passed away on August 11th. He had previously served as the director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) and the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC). At the age of 78, he succumbed to age-related illnesses. In recognition of his significant contributions to science and technology, he was honoured with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan award in 2010.

About Bikash Sinha

Bikash Sinha (16 June 1945 – 11 August 2023) was an Indian physicist who was active in the fields of nuclear physics and high-energy physics. He was the director of the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre and the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics and a member of the Indian National Science Academy.

Birth and Education

Sinha was born in Calcutta, in 1945. He studied physics at the University of Calcutta, where he received his M.Sc. degree in 1967. He then went on to study at the University of Oxford, where he received his D.Phil. degree in 1971.

Bikash Sinha’s Career

After his return to India, Sinha joined the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre as a research scientist. He rose through the ranks and became the director of the center in 1994. He served as the director of the center for 15 years, during which time he made significant contributions to the development of nuclear physics and high-energy physics in India.

In 2009, Sinha was appointed as the director of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics. He served as the director of the institute for 10 years, during which time he continued to make significant contributions to the field of physics.

Awards/Honors

Bikash Sinha was awarded the Shri Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1984. The prize is awarded by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research for outstanding contributions to science.
