These included the inauguration of adjacent land acquired from the Mumbai Port Authority (MPA) and; the launch of a prototype of an indigenous midget submarine.

Singapore’s Deputy Leader Lawrence Wong to Be Sworn in as Nation’s Fourth PM

Singapore’s deputy leader Lawrence Wong is set to be sworn in as the nation’s fourth Prime Minister. Fifty-one-old US-trained economist Mr Wong will succeed 72-year-old Lee Hsien Loong, who stepped down after two decades at the helm. Lee’s resignation marked the end of a family dynasty led by his father Lee Kuan Yew.

India-US Dialogue on Africa Held in Washington

The second round of the India-US Dialogue on Africa is being held in Washington. External Affairs Ministry said the two-day India-US dialogue aims to share ideas and perspectives and explore ways to develop institutional, technical, and bilateral synergies to work together in Africa.

India overtakes Australia, Japan, and Singapore in data center capacity

India has become the country with the highest data center capacity in the Asia-Pacific region, surpassing major countries like Australia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Singapore, and Korea. The country is expected to record the highest capacity addition of 850 MW during the 2024-2026 period, higher than major APAC countries.

The sector has seen significant investments from global operators, real estate developers, and private equity funds. In 2023, there was an addition of 255 MW of new supply, resulting in a total stock of approximately 1,030 MW by the end of the year.

AIIMS New Delhi Signed an MoU With the University of Bolton Institute of Medicine

AIIMS New Delhi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Bolton Institute of Medicine to collaborate in the field of medical research, innovation, and education. The medical institute said in a release that the MoU was signed through a virtual event by executives from both institutions.

It added that the partnership will encompass various initiatives such as staff and student exchange, educational conferences, and collaborative degree programs.

Centre Extends Ban Imposed on LTTE For Five More Years

The Centre has extended the ban on Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) for a further five years. The Ministry of Home Affairs in its notification said the central government has taken the decision in view of the activities of the LTTE that continues to pose a threat to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of India.

The Ministry cited the disruptive, separatist, and secessionist activities of LTTE that are a grave threat to the security of Indian nationals as the reason for the ban. The government declared the LTTE as an unlawful association in May 2019 and banned it for five years.

Hygiene brand Pee Safe launches a chatbot to increase awareness and help shoppers

Pee Safe, a personal hygiene and wellness brand, has announced the launch of PeePal, an AI-driven chatbot, in a wider attempt to help with personal hygiene shopping and also educate consumers on hygiene and self-care practices. According to McKinsey, AI technologies could add up to $1 trillion in value annually, with revamped customer service playing a crucial role.

With the global conversational AI market growing at a CAGR of 22%, reaching nearly $14 billion by 2025, chatbots like PeePal are at the forefront of enterprise AI adoption, it said.

SBI becomes trading-clearing member of IIBX at GIFT City

The State Bank of India (SBI) on 14 May announced that it has secured the distinction of being the first bank to become a trading-cum-clearing (TCM) Member of India International Bullion Exchange at the GIFT City in Gujarat. This milestone enables SBI IBU Gift City to conduct trades on the IIBX platform and settle them on behalf of its clients, per an official release.

RBI guidelines permitted branches of an Indian Bank in GIFT IFSC to act as a trading member (TM)/trading and clearing member (TCM) of IIBX. The central bank also allowed special category clients (SCC) which are nominated banks in India to import gold through IIBX.

Canadian Author Alice Munro and Nobel Laureate Passes Away at the Age Of 92

Canadian author Alice Munro and Nobel laureate passed away at the age of 92. She wrote short stories for more than 60 years, often focusing on life in rural Canada. She was often compared to Russian writer Anton Chekhov for the insight and compassion found in her stories. Munro was the recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013.

The Nobel committee called Munro a “master of contemporary short stories”. Her first major breakthrough came in 1968, when her short story collection, Dance of The Happy Shades, about life in the suburbs of western Ontario, won Canada’s highest literary honor, the Governor General’s Award. It was the first of three Governor General’s Awards she would win in her lifetime.

Munro has published thirteen collections of stories as well as one novel, Lives of Girls and Women, and two volumes of Selected Stories. Her last collection of stories, Dear Life, was published in 2012. It included a collection of partly autobiographical stories.

India’s ace women’s table tennis player Manika Batra became the first Indian woman paddler to break into the top 25 of the world Women’s singles rankings. Sathyan’s five-year-old record for the highest rank achieved by an Indian in singles table tennis.

Manika, the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist in individual and team categories, jumped 15 spots following her run in Jeddah, where she reached the quarterfinals.
