77th World Health Assembly adopts amendments to International Health Regulations 2005 based on 300 proposals by member states

In a landmark achievement in the global health security agenda, the 77th World Health Assembly agreed to the package of amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) based on 300 proposals made by member countries after the COVID-19 pandemic.

The targeted amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) aim at improving countries’ ability to prepare for and respond to Public Health Emergencies of International Concern (PHEIC) and Pandemic Emergencies (PE). As a result, on 1st June 2024, the Resolution to amendment of IHR (2005) was adopted by consensus in the 77th World Health Assembly.

The appointment of Batra will be effective from June 30, 2024. Batra has been associated with ICICI group since September 2000 and is currently an Executive Director on the Board of ICICI Bank since 2018.

India Bags 7 Medals Including 3 Gold, 3 Silver, and One Bronze at Taiwan Athletics Open

In the Taiwan Athletics Open 2024, the Indian contingent concluded the campaign with a remarkable medal haul, bagging seven medals including three golds, three silvers, and one bronze medal. In women’s Long Jump, Nayana James clinched the gold medal, registering the best jump of 6.43 meters today. Sumire Hata of Japan won the silver.

In Men’s 800 meters, India’s Ankesh Choudhary bagged the gold, clocking 1 minute 50.63 seconds, while compatriot Somnath Chouhan won the silver medal clocking 1 minute 50.88 seconds. In Men’s pole vault, Dev Meena won the silver medal. DP Manu in the men’s Javelin throw clinched the gold medal with the best effort of 81.58 meters, in women’s 100-meter hurdles.

Nithya Ramraj bagged the silver medal with a timing of 13.23 seconds. While Vismaya V K won the bronze in the women’s 400m race.

India’s Tanvi Sharma bagged the women’s singles title at the Bonn International Badminton Tournament, in Germany. The young Indian shuttler defeated Wang Pei Yu of Taiwan in straight sets, 21-19, 22-20. This is the first senior title for the 15-year-old Tanvi.

GST collection rises 10% to Rs 1.73 lakh crore in May

The gross Goods and Services Tax revenue for month of May this year stood at 1.73 lakh crore rupees. Ministry of Finance said that this represents a 10% year-on-year growth. Out of the total collection in the month of May, CGST is over 32,000 crore rupees, SGST is over 40,000 crore rupees, IGST is over 87,781 crore rupees and cess is over 12 thousand crore rupees.

The Ministry added that after accounting for refunds, the net GST revenue for the last month stands at 1.44 lakh crore rupees, reflecting a growth of 6.9% compared to the same period last year. The gross GST collections in the financial year 2024-25 stood at 3.83 lakh crore rupees. This represents an impressive 11.3% year-on-year growth.

REC board approves raising borrowing limit in foreign currency to $24 bn

REC Ltd said its board has approved raising the borrowing limit in foreign currency to $24 billion from $20 billion.

The overall borrowing limit in Indian rupees was however retained at Rs 6 lakh crore, the company said in an exchange filing. The board also approved raising up to Rs 1,45,000 crore through private placement of unsecured/secured non-convertible bonds.

REC, under the Ministry of Power, is a non-banking finance company, public financial institution, and infrastructure financing company.

ADB commits $2.6 billion in sovereign lending to India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) committed $2.6 billion in sovereign lending to India in 2023 for projects that aim to strengthen urban development, support industrial corridor development, promote power sector reforms, build India’s climate resilience, support horticulture, and enhance connectivity.

ADB also extended $23.53 million in technical assistance and $4.1 million in grants under the sovereign portfolio. In addition, ADB committed over $1 billion for private sector projects during the year. Established in 1966, it is owned by 68 members—49 from the region.
