The Department of Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) at Army Hospital (R&R) in Delhi Cantt. has achieved a remarkable milestone by conducting 50 bilateral simultaneous cochlear implants in the last 18 months. This achievement makes it the sole government hospital in the country to accomplish such a high number of successful cochlear implants. Cochlear implants have a transformative impact on the lives of individuals with hearing impairment. This achievement highlights the hospital’s commitment to providing this advanced medical intervention.
What is a Cochlear Implant?
A cochlear implant is a highly advanced medical device that allows individuals with hearing disabilities to reintegrate into the mainstream by restoring their ability to hear. The cost of cochlear implants has historically been a concern, limiting their accessibility. In many government-funded programs, children typically receive only one cochlear implant. However, the benefits of hearing through both ears far exceed the associated costs, and the Armed Forces Medical Services recognized the importance of this.
Their decision to provide simultaneous bilateral cochlear implants aligns with the understanding that restoring hearing in both ears significantly enhances the quality of life for individuals with hearing impairment.
Bilateral Simultaneous Cochlear Implants
In March 2022, a significant policy revision occurred for cochlear implants for hearing-impaired patients in the Armed Forces, which included simultaneous bilateral implants (implants in both ears). This marked the first policy of its kind in the country, aligning medical standards with those of developed nations.
DG Armed Forces Medical Services, Lt Gen Daljit Singh, and DGMS (Army), Lt Gen Arindam Chatterjee, have extended their congratulations to Army Hospital (R&R) for this remarkable achievement and wished for many more accomplishments in the future.
