The 4th edition of the Bilateral Exercise, BONGOSAGAR-23, and the 5th edition of the Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) between the Indian and Bangladesh Navies took place in the Northern Bay of Bengal from November 7 to 9, 2023. During this exercise, ships and aircraft from both navies jointly patrolled along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and engaged in maritime exercises to boost interoperability.
Indian and Bangladesh Navies Joint Exercise
The Indian Navy ships Kuthar and Kiltan, alongside the Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) Dornier, engaged in joint exercises with Bangladesh Navy ships Abu Bakr, Abu Ubaidah, and MPA during the CORPAT-23 exercise. The activities included communication drills, surface gunshoots, and tactical maneuvers, and culminated in a steam past.
Highlight: Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) Drills
CORPAT-23 marked a significant milestone with the inclusion of the maiden Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) drills. These drills involved a Search and Rescue scenario at sea, showcasing the commitment to cooperation in handling crises. The regular bilateral exercises and coordinated patrols have enhanced mutual understanding between the Indian and Bangladesh navies.
About INS Kuthar and INS Kiltan
INS Kuthar, an indigenously built guided-missile Corvette, and INS Kiltan, an indigenously built anti-submarine Corvette, operate under the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy based in Visakhapatnam. Both ships fall under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.
About Ex-BONGOSAGAR between the 2 Navies
BONGOSAGAR is a bilateral naval exercise between India and Bangladesh. The name “BONGOSAGAR” is a combination of the Bengali words “Bongo” (meaning Bengal) and “Sagar” (meaning Sea). The exercise is held annually in the Bay of Bengal, and it aims to promote interoperability and cooperation between the Indian and the Bangladesh Navies.
The first edition of BONGOSAGAR was held in 2020, and the second edition was held in 2022. The exercise also helps to promote peace and stability in the Bay of Bengal region.
