BRO Begins Construction of World’s Highest Motorable Road in Ladakh

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has embarked on an ambitious and pioneering project aimed at building the ‘Likaru-Mig La-Fukche’ road in the Demchok sector of Ladakh. This strategic road endeavor is poised to establish a remarkable distinction as the highest motorable road globally, situated at an impressive altitude of around 19,400 feet.

This achievement will surpass the previous record held by the Umling La Pass. Notably, this groundbreaking initiative was initiated on India’s 77th Independence Day, symbolizing its profound importance for national security and strategic infrastructure development.

More About the Project

  • The upcoming Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road, located near Hanle in Eastern Ladakh, is slated to extend over a distance of 64 kilometers.
  • At its zenith, this road will reach an astonishing altitude of 19,400 feet, solidifying its status as the highest motorable road globally upon its successful completion.
Umling La Pass
  • The present holder of the highest motorable road record is the Umling La road in Ladakh, constructed by the BRO, which stands at an elevation of 19,024 feet.
  • This 52-kilometer road establishes a vital link between Chishumle and Demchok, positioned directly on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) – the disputed boundary between India and China.
  • Contrastingly, the forthcoming Likaru-Mig La-Fukche road, which will connect Likaru and Fukche, is situated at a distance of three kilometers from the LAC in Eastern Ladakh. This pioneering road construction project holds strategic significance in bolstering connectivity and accessibility in the region.

Nyoma Airfield

The Ministry of Defence has also commenced an ambitious project this week to expand the Nyoma Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) in eastern Ladakh into a fully operational base capable of facilitating fighter aircraft takeoffs.

  • The scope of this endeavor involves the construction of a 2.7-kilometer concrete runway and complementary infrastructure, with the project expected to be finalized within a span of less than 20 months.
  • Elevating Nyoma to a comprehensive operating base is particularly significant since it will hold the distinction of being the highest airfield globally, situated at an elevation of 13,700 feet.
  • To accommodate this high altitude, adjustments are being made to fighter engines to enable their performance in such conditions.
  • Currently functioning as an ALG, Nyoma’s existing runway is composed of soil, which restricts its usage to specialized transport aircraft such as the C-130J and helicopters.
  • Once the new concrete runway is completed, the base’s capabilities will expand to include heavier transport aircraft, thereby enhancing the strategic depth of the Indian military and bolstering operational capabilities in the region.
