KVIC Introduced ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ (Khadi-Rakhi)

The Chairman of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Shri Manoj Kumar, unveiled ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ to mark the occasion of Raksha Bandhan in New Delhi today. This unique ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ (Khadi-Rakhi) was introduced under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, during his address on ‘National Handloom Day’ on August 7th, 2023 at Pragati Maidan New Delhi, encouraged citizens to support rural artisans by selecting Khadi and Village Industries products for their upcoming festive celebrations. This initiative aims to create more employment opportunities in the remote rural areas of India.

About Khadi Rakshasoot (Khadi-Rakhi)

  • ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ stands out due to its unique creation process involving dedicated spinner sisters from rural India who spin multiple threads on the charkha.
  • This product is entirely natural and free from any chemical additives.
  • For instance, the Gramodyogik Vikas Sansthan in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, has crafted a Rakhi using sacred cow dung from indigenous Holy Gau Mata.
  • It also incorporates seeds of Basil, tomato, and brinjal to enhance its composition.
  • The idea behind its creation is that when it’s disposed of in the earth, it will sprout into basil, tomato, and brinjal plants.
  • These special Khadi Rakshasoots, made in various states of the country, are now available for purchase at Khadi Bhawan in New Delhi, with prices ranging from ₹20 to ₹250 each.

Pilot Project to promote Khadi-Rakhi

This year, ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ is being introduced as a ‘Pilot Project’ initiative exclusively available at Khadi Bhawan in New Delhi. Looking forward, comprehensive plans are being put in place to launch ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ nationwide in the coming year. He passionately appealed to the public, encouraging them to embrace ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ – a remarkable representation of India’s national heritage through Khadi. By doing so, they wouldn’t just be preserving India’s rich legacy but also actively contributing to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Significance of Khadi

  • Khadi holds a deep significance as a symbol of our national heritage and played a crucial role during India’s struggle for independence.
  • Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Khadi has experienced a revival, entering its ‘Golden Age’ in the last nine years.
  • In the previous fiscal year, the revenue from Khadi and Village Industries products exceeded ₹1.34 lakh crores.
  • Additionally, in the current financial year, Khadi has achieved a historic milestone by generating over 9.5 lakh new jobs.

With this renewed strength of Khadi, the Prime Minister has designated ‘New India’s new Khadi’ as not just clothing but also a ‘weapon.’ This weapon is aimed at combating poverty, empowering artisans, ensuring food security, promoting women’s empowerment, and eradicating unemployment.

Promotion of Khadi

  • Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, through his widely acclaimed radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ since 2014, has been inspiring the citizens of our nation to embrace Khadi and Village Industries products.
  • The impact of this endeavor has been truly remarkable, leading to a transformative revival of the Khadi industry.
  • What was once a declining sector before the year 2013-14 has now experienced a remarkable resurgence.
  • The skills of rural artisans are not only gaining recognition but they are also receiving fair compensation for their craftsmanship.

In line with the commitment to enhance the economic well-being of artisans, KVIC has introduced ‘Khadi Rakshasoot’ in the market. As we approach the auspicious occasion of Rakshabandhan, it’s not only an opportunity to adorn your wrist with a Khadi Rakshasoot as you celebrate the festival but also a chance to bring smiles to the faces of the women artisans in rural India.
