R Madhavan Appointed President of FTII Pune

On September 1st, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) announced the appointment of actor R Madhavan as the President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society, as well as the Chairperson of the Governing Council.

This appointment comes following the conclusion of the tenure of the previous President and Director, Shekhar Kapur, which ended on March 3, 2023.

R Madhavan

Madhavan is renowned for his roles in blockbuster films like ‘3 Idiots,’ ‘Tanu Weds Manu,’ and ‘Rang De Basanti.’ He recently made his directorial debut with ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect,’ a film that received significant acclaim and was honored with the Best Feature Film Award at the 69th National Awards. Notably, Madhavan not only acted but also co-wrote the film alongside Anant Mahadevan and Rahul Pandey.

His appointment as the President of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) Society and Chairperson of the Governing Council follows the film’s remarkable success, particularly its recognition at the national level.

About Rocketry: The Nambi Effect

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ delves into the life of former ISRO scientist S Nambi Narayanan and his invaluable contributions to India’s space agency. Its receipt of a national award underscores the film’s captivating narrative and its role in showcasing India’s scientific achievements.

Interestingly, the National Award for ‘Rocketry’ was conferred on August 24th, coinciding with a historic achievement by ISRO. On August 23rd, ISRO accomplished the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the lunar surface’s South Pole. This dual recognition highlights India’s excellence not only in cinematic storytelling but also in the realm of space exploration.

About Film and Television Institute of India (FTII)

The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) is a premier film school in India. It is located in Pune, Maharashtra. The institute was established in 1960 by the Government of India. It offers a variety of courses in film and television making, including direction, cinematography, editing, sound recording, production design, and screenwriting.

FTII Society

The FTII Society, led by the FTII Chairperson, comprises 12 nominees, with eight nominated under the ‘Persons of Eminence’ category and four being FTII alumni. Typically, the Ministry selects these members when appointing the institute’s Chairperson. However, it’s worth noting that this tradition was deviated from when actor Anupam Kher was appointed in October 2017.

In the case of R Madhavan’s appointment, it appears that other nominations have not been announced, suggesting a similar departure from the traditional process. Once a quorum of 24 members is complete, including 12 ex-officio members, various councils, such as the Governing Council, Academic Council, and Standing Finance Committee, are formed from among the members. These councils play a crucial role in making decisions related to the institute’s administration, academic activities, and financial matters.
