What is SSB?

SSB or Sashastra Seema Bal is a specialized force within India’s Central Armed Police Forces. It falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Pre 2001, the same force was known as the Special Service Bureau. As per a report of 2017, this branch of police forces has 67 battalions and more than 76,000 active personnel.

SSC CPO SSB Job profile

Since SSB is an old institution, its responsibilities have changed over time. A few years back, SSB was in charge of mobilizing India’s border population for national peace. This was necessary both in the times of peace and of war. SSB’s role helped patriotism prosper and gave a sense of unity to the border population in India.

However, with time, the role and responsibilities of Sashastra Seema Bal have changed. Now, as a member of the force, you would need to maintain control over India’s borders. SSBs prevent illegal immigration using the borders, to and from India.

Apart from ensuring secured borders, the forces root out any smuggling rackets taking place along the borders of India. Lastly, the SSB candidates must stop terrorist activities or any other anti-national activities as well.

Currently, the Government of India is contemplating whether they should assign additional duties to the SSB to expand their role.

SSBs fall under the CAPF and thus enjoy a Level 6 pay scale. They fall under the Non-Gazetted ‘B’ section of government employees. Their pay scale ranges from Rs 35400-112400/-. SSC CPO SSB Job profile – Promotion opportunities

Since you would be joining in the post of sub-inspector, after clearing the SSC CPO examination, your promotion would be lower than many other members in the force. On average, an SI SSB would be eligible for a promotion after 5 years of service on the SSB. However, the Ministry of Home Affairs offers a bit of relaxation in this regard. Therefore, you will need to serve for a period of 4 years, 2 months and 20 days, before you become eligible for promotions to the post of inspector.
